We’ve been watching some classic horror films for this Halloween and one of those films is Children of the Corn from 1984 which is available to watch on the Arrow Video Channel.
A young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed.
If you’ve not seen the movie that was based on Stephen King’s short story then where have you been, I remember seeing the film back in the 80s with it tranquil start of the church-goers leaving the church in the American town only to be totally shocked by the bloodshed and carnage that happened shortly after.
When it comes to films adapted from Stephen King stories they always seem to have a certain feel to them, I can’t put my finger on what, but Children of the Corn is one of them.
Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton) really don’t know what they are heading into when they arrive at the town that is controlled by the very unnerving Isaac (John Franklin), who later went on to play Cousin It in The Addams Family!
Back in the 80s when I first saw Children of the Corn it freaked me out, mind you in those days I was a bit of a newcomer when it came to the horror genre and I was only in my early teens, but scenes in the film still shock me a tad, look out for the car accident scene it’s one that you know is coming but none the less it still shocks you.
Children of the Corn takes the “slasher movie” genre that step further than a crazed maniac on the loose and sets you up with the fear that it’s the children committing the horrors and that what looks like an innocent child can kill you as quickly as they look at you. But it soon takes a step towards the supernatural to bring in the explanation of why Isaac wants to kill anyone over the age of 18.
Although the film is 36 years old now, it still works as a film to watch on a Halloween night with the lights out, the storytelling from the Job (Robby Kiger) with his voice-over helps the story along and is a nice touch that a film about children is lead along by a narrative from a child.
There are probably going to many horror fans that are used to the over the top gore etc that Children of the Corn may be not for them, but if like me you like the classic horror movies of the 80s and 90s then this is one to check out, but don’t watch it alone!
