An extinction event has begun and the human race just hit the endangered species list in the new film Chronical 2067 from Seth Larney.

With the air so polluted that the only way to breathe is through manufactured air canisters, the human race is on its knees until a message from the future gives one of the biggest corporations on Earth hope. A reclusive young man named Ethan is to be the saviour of the human race but what he discovers in his journey through time is an unthinkable conspiracy that could lead him to change the course of his timeline forever. Would you save humanity if you knew humanity may not be worth saving after all? Starring Ryan Kwanten and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Directed by Seth Larney.

One of the things that pulled me towards Chronical 2067 was the idea of the theme running with Time Travel, it’s something that I have always had an interest in back from those days of hiding behind the sofa as a child watching Doctor Who on a Saturday evening, so 2067 had me wanting to watch the film as soon as I saw the trailer for it.

The film starts off with us seeing a rather bleak world and one that really has no chance of survival, possibly out future if we all carry on the way we are treating mother earth, Ethan (Kodi Smit-McPhee, X-Men: Apocalypse, ParaNorman) is working hard trying to survive in this world of decay, alongside him is his best friend and work-colleague Jude, (Ryan Kwanten, True Blood, Dead Silence).

We are taken on a series of flashbacks of Ethan’s childhood and see his father placing a wristband on Ethan in a terrifyingly painful way it what looks like a toaster and then his father disappearing after Ethan and his mother go to meet his father on a night that would change his life and his future course.

With a message from the future asking for Ethan, we are then taken on the journey to the future and for Ethan to discover more about who has sent the message, why the Chronicon was built and more importantly what happened to his father.

Chronical 2067 kind of reminded me of the H.G. Wells’ Time Machine, mainly the parts of the book when the traveller heads to the far-flung future only to find that man had developed underground dwellers and the above-ground ones that seem to be there for their bidding, but with 2067 there is not really that much of an adventure in the future and it becomes more of a quest for Ethan to discover what is going on and a chance to add a nice time twist to the story that I have to say did work nicely.

The film does look good, the cinematography is nicely shot, the future scenes with the decaying building and the forests that have taken back the planet look superb, a huge change to the early part of the film with the dark, foreboding, BladeRunner type look.

Chronical 2067 is a rather slow film, don’t expect any big action set pieces, but instead, you get some great visuals, but sadly this doesn’t make the film one of the best time travel movies, but it is certainly one that had me glued to figure out who had asked for Ethan and some other questions that arise once he arrives in the future.
