Now most of you will know how much I like the classic movies, from the silent black & white films to some of the most recent classics from the 80s and indeed the 90s. So today I thought I would bring you a collection of some of the releases to look forward to from those awesome people over at Arrow Films to add to your movie collection in 2017.
January will see movies for all fans of many genres from the dark and sinister to romance, with some great titles coming along in the first month of the year, which isn’t far away, I’ve picked a few that I’m really looking forward to seeing and getting my hands on for my own movie collection.
January Recommendations (New Releases)
So one of my all time favourite movies is being released on Blu-ray, a film that plays with time and features a guy in rabbit suit, yes folks I’m talking about the amazing Donnie Darko, this month (December) saw the Limited Edition release of Donnie Darko, on January 9th the standard edition will be released on both DVD and Blu-ray. The DVD release offers the theatrical cut of the mind-bending classic, while the Blu-ray release has both the theatrical and director’s cuts on board! This is going to be a must for fans of the cult favourite.
Love westerns? I do, the amazing films of Sergio Leone introduced me to the world of cowboys, they also got me watching other westerns by other directors and a movie that I have enjoyed many times is Sam Peckinpah’s Bring Me The Head Of Alfred Garcia, what I love about the movie is Peckinpah was left to his devices, allowing him to make the exact film that he wanted and giving us this raw piece of ‘Pure Peckinpah’, a director’s dream.
With a great cast including Warren Oats and Robert Webber, the movie is a film that the majority of Western fans will want in their collection on Blu-ray, Bring Me The Head Of Alfred Garcia is released in Limited Edition Blu-ray on the 23rd January.
Moving from the bizarre of Donnie Darko and from the wild west of Bring Me The Head OF Alfred Garcia, we move on to a romantic classic from Woody Allan as a movie star, played by Jeff Daniels, steps out of the movie screen to meet a lonely waitress, played my Mia Farrow, in Allan’s brilliant film, The Purple Rose of Cairo. Based in 1930s New Jersey it’s both a hilarious romantic comedy and a complex philosophical essay about the nature of illusion and reality, The Purple Rose of Cairo is possibly one of Woody Allen’s richest films, its ideas slipping down so easily that it only later becomes apparent just how deep they are.
February Recommendations (New Releases)
Continuing with Woody Allan, Arrow Films will be releasing several more of his movies in February, but the one that caught my eye was Radio Days, the film is a nostalgic look back at the golden days of radio, Radio Days is both heartwarming and hilarious. It’s recreation of the 1930s and 1940s earned it an Oscar nomination for its art direction, while Roger Ebert described it as “spinning out one delight after another.” Radio Days will be released on the 20th February on Blu-ray
Returning to the Westerns and another amazing film, this time by John Ford, a movie starring Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp and the first Western since John Ford’s classic movie Stagecoach. My Darling Clementine tells the famous story of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but in Ford’s hands, it’s a lyrical masterpiece, filled with iconic moments. This Arrow Academy special edition is packed with extras that will keep cinephiles and Western fans enthralled for hours.
The Blu-ray, which is released on the 27th February, features High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentation of the 4K digital restored film.
March Recommendations (New Releases)
Now for me watching some rather crazy movies in the 80s, there was one collection of films that I always loved and now thanks to Arrow Films, that collection of films will be available in March 2017 on dual format Blu-ray/DVD, four movies that featured undead Vietnam vets, zombie cowboys, murderers that refuse to die and, naturally and possessed pizzas, I’m talking about the hysterically funny, House! These movies were bonkers, but so much fun to watch, so now that my videos of the films have been well and truly worn out, I can;t wait to get my hands on this boxset when it is released on the 20th March.
So it looks like the first three months of 2017 are going to be great for those of us that want to ge our hands on some brilliant classic and modern day classic movies on Blu-ray.
