Just before the Halloween/Horror season, we brought you news of the new trailer for the upcoming Welsh horror/thriller Concrete Plans today we bring you a review of the new movie made in Wales.

Some debts are paid in blood… A manor house in disrepair and a landowner with a fierce temper and cash flow problem meets his match when confronted with a bill he can’t pay. Time is running out and the builders living on his land want their pound of flesh. When it becomes clear there is no cash, a red mist descends, the class divide widens and a simple dispute turns into a shockingly horrific display of violence as events spiral out of control. 

Now I have to say that from the trailer for Concrete Plans I wasn’t really sure what I was expecting from the film directed by Will Jewell, the film starts with the mismatch of builders getting together to start a new job on a country farm in South Wales, right from the start you start to have ideas about some of the characters, which is brought across from the attitudes that they have.

Arriving at the job they are greeted by the owner Simon (Kevin Guthrie) who treats them like crap, his attitude towards them is one of distrust and that they are far beneath him, but he really doesn’t know what he is letting himself in for.

Due to his financial situation and his lack of money, Jim can’t afford to pay the team that is working on the farmhouse and in turn, things take a turn for the worse with a rather brutal scene with him being thrashed and beaten to an inch of his life by a psychopathic Jim (Chris Reilly).

Concrete Plans is a nicely put-together thriller, once it gets going I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. The builders are nicely played, and their various traits come across very well, such as Jim’s lust for getting what he wants, Steve (Charley Palmer Rothwell) who loves violence and attaches himself to Jim, his uncle Bob (Steve Spiers) trying to be the voice of reason, Dave (William Thomas) who just wants to get the job done and get paid and Viktor (Goran Bogdan) who wants to get the job done so he can send the money home to his daughter.

The film is nicely shot and even the night scenes have some great cinematography that allows the actors to pop without making them hard to see in the subdued light. The moments of the brutality are done without being too gory or over the top with the sound being used nicely instead of the gory visuals, although we do still get some bloody scenes to make you feel a little uneasy.

Director and writer Will Jewell‘s directorial feature has certainly brought a film and story that is one that is certainly one that will make you think again about who you hire to do your building work!

Adding to the atmosphere is the soundtrack from Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll and I have to say, being a fan of Orbital, works very well to bring the feeling of unease to the overall production.

If you are looking for a nicely made UK-made film then this is certainly one you should check out.
