It was another trip to Cineworld on Friday to catch the morning showing of DOG starring Channing Tatum and the story of a lovely Belgian Malinois in a delightful movie of a journey of discovery and emotions.
DOG is a buddy comedy that follows the misadventures of two former Army Rangers paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Ranger Briggs (Channing Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, break a small handful of laws, narrowly evade death, and learn to let down their guards in order to have a fighting chance of finding happiness.
I have to say that I wasn’t too sure about seeing the movie when I first saw the trailer in the cinema, but the more I saw the trailer during my visits the more I was intrigued to check Dog out, so I pre-booked my seat at Cineworld in Llandudno and headed over during Storm Eunice to kick back with a Friday morning at the cinema.
Dog isn’t just about a guy taking a dog on a journey, but it is a story of love and loss, the movie certainly hits the emotions while you watch, the opening sequence of the movie shows us what Lulu (the dog) has gone through while being with the Rangers and why she has been retired from the services as we see her on the operating table, hints of showing why she has issues and is known as problem dog are also teased in the pictures and letters shown on the screen.
Army Ranger Briggs (Tatum) has been in the field with Lulu and he himself has suffered during the conflict of war after his own surgery and trying to get back in the field but he is suffering from PTSD and seizures. Briggs is asked to take Lulu to the funeral of her handler and so the man and dog road trip start their journey together.
There are some wonderful moments through the movie as Briggs and Lulu have an adventure during the journey, such as the pair stumble upon a drug farm and Lulu decimating Briggs car upholstery, there are also those moments that play on your emotions as we learn more about Briggs’ life and of course, the relationship that the two build up over time.
Dog is certainly not what I was expecting, the comedy elements are nicely done and there are some great shots of Briggs and Lulu together that just give you those “awwww” moments, Reid Carolin & Channing Tatum have directed a delightful movie that is lovely to watch and if you are a dog lover then this will be a movie that you will want to see.
Along with Channing Tatum, Dog also features Jane Adams, Kevin Nash, Q’orianka Kilcher, Ethan Suplee, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Nicole LaLiberté, Luke Forbes and Ronnie Gene Blevins. The movie is out now in Cinemas.
