Review: Dual (2022), Karen Gillan gets cloned in this new sci-fi movie from Sky Original

Dual is the new movie from Sky Original on the Sky platform starring Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), so I thought I’d kick back and check out the new sci-fi movie.

A terminally ill woman (Gillan) opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family. When she makes a miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death.

Dual (2022) Opening Sequence

In the opening scene of a duel to the death between two we see a brutal fight between the clone and the original, this set me up on the path that we would be getting a bit of an action movie with some brutality, but sadly not, the film slows right down after this sequence as we are introduced to Karen Gillan’s character.

We then go on a journey of Gillan discovering she is dying and setting up a clone to replace her when she dies in an attempt for her family and her boyfriend not to be in a world without her, but not everything goes to plan and soon Sarah (Karen Gillan) is told that her incurable deceased is in remissions and that she is cured, but as she has a clone she must have it “decommissioned”.

Dual (2022) Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan

Sarah’s clone is now rooted in her families life and even her boyfriend (Beulah Koale) prefers the clone over her, so now Sarah must take things into her own hands and hooks up with Trent (Aaron Paul) to help her train to take on her clone and destroy it for her to continue her life as the law stipulates that original and clone can not be allowed to co-exist.

I was really interested in the premise of Dual, Gillan plays the two parts very differently from the original Sarah being rather melodic when she speaks and the clone being more human than the original Sarah, as the film progresses we learn more about the duel that Sarah and her clone must go through, the longer the two are here the longer that Sarah has to pay support to her double which almost makes Sarah penniless and if she defaults on payments the court will make it harder for Sarah and give her a handicap during the fight for her right to live.

Dual (2022) Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan

Dual is a film that you may want to check out if you are a fan of either Karen Gillan or Aaron Paul, it is very slow-paced but the idea is an interesting one of what could happen if clones are given rights over being “decommissioned” if someone is cured of a lethal decease, the ending of the film is somewhat predictable and I was hoping for a more explosive ending, but the one we get seems to work for what the film needs to bring to the viewer.

Dual is available to watch on Sky and stream on Now.
