A few years ago we seemed to have a craze of Escape Room films and the first film in this series wasn’t too bad so when I heard about Escape Room Tournament of Champions I thought what the heck I’ll check that out and seeing as Cineworld had it last night as an Unlimited Screening, what better way to spend a Thursday night.
Six people unwittingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive. Joining forces with two of the original survivors, they soon discover they’ve all played the game before.
The premise for Escape Room 2 is very much the same as the first film as you can see from the synopsis above, the film follows on from the last film as Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) still trying to find the organisers of the Escape Room from the first film if you haven’t seen the previous movie then don’t worry we are given a recap of the film with clips from it telling the “story so far”.
Zoey is seeing a councillor to help her with her issue of not being able to fly to be able to travel to the coordinates that she has to find Minos who seem to have an unlimited supply of funding to create the rooms and kill its players.
What we have with Escape Room Tournament of Champions is very much the first film with the added storyline of Zoey and Ben being pulled into another collection of Escape Rooms that seem more advanced than those in the first film and working together with survivors of their own rooms.
The potential of making this a pretty shocking and gory movie is lost as it seems toned down and I have to say that I did find myself getting a little bored while watching the group of six trying to solve the puzzles to escape, thankfully the short running time of 1h 28mins is spot on, any longer and I might have left the screening!
We all knew that after Escape Room 2019 a sequel was bound to happen, it did well making much more than its $9 million budget, but personally, for me, there really isn’t anything new that stood out to me or shocked me, yes there is a twist to the story, but you can see that coming a mile off. The same goes for the ending of the film, as soon as that last scene comes along you just know that’s where the film was heading to.
There will most probably be a sequel to carry on the story, but I really hope that if there is that the film is kept to a trilogy and that something is brought to it that is far more exciting and jaw-dropping!
