Movie news for those of you that love the classic movies and are collecting The Master of Cinema series of releases, as we have news today that the 1944 classic Cover Girl is being released this month.

Cover Girl is one of the most lavish and successful Hollywood musicals of the 1940s, Charles Vidor’s film is a breath-taking spectacle that established its stars Rita Hayworth (Gilda, The Lady from Shanghai) and Gene Kelly (Singin’ in the Rain), as the two most popular actors of their time.

Nightclub dancer Rusty (Hayworth) has a happy life performing at her boyfriend Danny’s (Kelly) club in Brooklyn, but her whole world changes once she wins a prestigious Cover Girl contest arranged by a wealthy magazine editor (Otto Kruger). Rusty soon becomes a Broadway sensation, but is fame and fortune a substitute for true love?

Also starring the legendary Sergeant Bilko himself, Phil Silvers (The Phil Silvers Show, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World) and the recipient of 5 Academy Award nominations (winning for Best Musical Scoring), Cover Girl was Columbia studio’s first Technicolor musical, and remains one of the finest musical pictures of all time. The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present the film for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK in a stunning Dual-format edition.

Cover Girl, An Entertaining Musical Comedy

With the release of the superb La La Land recently there is a big interest in musicals and especially those from the 1940s, so Cover Girl is certainly a movie that, in its restored image, brings the world of Technicolour to back to life and shows of how amazing these musicals looks back in their heydays when they were first released in cinemas.

Cover Girl was shot in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio (is an aspect ratio of a frame of 35mm film when used with 4-perf pulldown. It was standardised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the standard film aspect ratio in 1932, although similar-sized ratios were used as early as 1928 – Wikipedia). For widescreen systems screening this disc, the display mode should be toggled (via the corresponding button on the remote or on-screen setup menu) until the frame appears with its original dimensions intact, pillar boxed (black bars bordering the left and right of the image).
