We recently brought you the news from Lightbulb Film Distribution of the release of Every Time I Die via the official poster and trailer for the upcoming meta-physical sci-fi thriller.
Today I’m bringing you my review of Every Time I Die which will be available across all major streaming and Digital Platforms from 26th October.
After Sam (Drew Fonteiro “The Last Ship”) is murdered, his consciousness travels through the body of his best friend, Jay (Marc Menchaca “Ozark”), to protect him from his killer.
I have to start by saying that I love the idea of Every Time I Die, we’ve probably seen so many movies that have that vengeful ghost that hunts down its killer and unleashes hell in horrific ways, but with with this film it takes a different approach as Sam (Fonteiro) doesn’t go towards the light and branches off from the tunnel to heaven and arrives in Jay’s body, but he has not idea at first what is going on and in turn his fellow friends, who have no idea where Sam as gone, think that Jay (Menchaca) is having one of his mental breakdowns.
Every Time I Die does have a bit of a slow start as we are introduced to Sam and his friends and he always seems to be the odd one out, there is something that is just not right with Sam, not in a bad way but in a way that even Sam isn’t sure about himself, the opening of the movie with Sam waking up and the first person camera view is a little strange, but it works very well and certainly sets you on the path that this film is going to be unusual and thought-provoking.
The cast certainly bring the film down to Earth giving it that Indie feel, but at the same time giving it a feel that it has been made with a passion for the production and the story of Sam’s journey, once you get past the initial slowish beginning the film has you wondering who is going to be murdering Sam, is it some random psycho on the loose or could it even be one of his friends at the lake house, all will be revealed at a rather violent scene at the edge of the lake.
Every Time I Die had me glued from the moment that Sam’s memories from his childhood start coming back as some nicely done flashbacks, it had me wondering who was Sam, why does he have the headaches and the many moments that he blacks out and loses time, obviously all would be revealed in the climax of the film and a lovely twist that some may see coming and some may not.
Unlike many Sci-Fi films, we seem to see these days Every Time I Die isn’t laden with special effects, there are some nice subtle ones during the film, such as a hole in Sam’s hand which at first you aren’t sure why it’s there, but it’s all made clear later on, which shows the great writing from Gal Katzir and Robi Michael.
Robi Michael who also directed the film has done a great job bringing the story to the screen and bringing the characters to life with a great cast, the cinematography from Tal Lazar works nicely for the content of the film as well, Gal Katzir’s editing of Every Time I Die also works very well with the flashback scenes and others fitting in nicely to the set pieces.
I have to say that I really enjoyed the film, it’s nice to see a movie that has taken Sci-Fi and added a thriller twist to it and makes you wonder could some of us actually be in the same predicament as Sam and what would we do.
