With a couple of visits to the Multiverse already at Cineworld with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, last night it was the chance for more but this time around with Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All At Once at the Cineworld Unlimited Screening.
I have to say that films from A24 are a bit of a hit and miss for me, with Zola being possibly one of the worst films I’ve seen in years, but Everything Everywhere All At Once appealed to me for several reasons, one being that is was about the multiverse, two it stars Michelle Yeoh & Ke Huy Quan and three the trailer looked crazy.
So I headed out to Cineworld to check out the film that is described as “a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action-adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can’t seem to finish her taxes.“, even that description had me wondering how bonkers the film would be.
Sometimes when you go to see a film that you really don’t know much about it can go one of two ways, but thankfully this momentous 2h 19m film is one that had me gripped from start to finish, it may be a little slow as it builds up the characters that will be taking you through the multiverse as we are introduced to their current lives at the laundromat with Evelyn (Yeoh) attempting to get her taxes in order to take them to the IRS to be audited.
It’s when we get to the IRS that things start to go crazy and I mean that in a good way, forget what you may think you know about the multiverse as Everything Everywhere All At Once turns it on its head and we are treated to some of the craziest multiverses jumping you will possibly see this year in what is one of the best movies to batter your head and have you glued to the screen.
This is a film that takes the Multiverse idea and throws in some amazing stunt work, visual effects and martial arts that will make you want to watch the film more than once, heck with so many multiverses you’d be mad not to see it more than once.
Michelle Yeoh is outstanding in the film and its always a joy to see her on the screen this role shows how much a brilliant actress she is, joining her as her on-screen husband is Ke Huy Quan (many of you will recognise him as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), the pair work brilliantly together and you can feel the connections they have through the multiverses when they are on the screen together.
Stephanie Hsu plays Evely and Waymond’s daughter Joy and I loved that there is way much more to this character than I first thought, she shines through as she ……. (I can’t say much without giving something away).
Adding to the family values is the brilliant James Hong who has recently been given a star on the walk of fame which is about time, many movie fans will know him from Bug Trouble in Little China, there are some nice surprises in his role as Gong Gong.
Let’s not forget Jamie Lee Curtis who plays Deirdre Beaubeirdra, the IRS agent, she’s slightly recognisable but boy does she bring us some great lines and some comedy to Everything Everywhere All At Once, as always a she’s always great to watch on the big screen.
Directors and Writers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, have certainly brought us a film that is totally bonkers, loads of fun and has lots of moments that had me laughing out loud, look out for Harry Shum Jr as a chef and be prepared for something you may not expect.
If you are looking for a movie that will take you on another journey to the multiverse or even if you fancy some all-out action, great stunts & visuals, comedy and much more then Everything Everywhere All At Once is the movie for you, it’s certainly one of my top movies of 2022 so far, but don’t take my word for it go check it for yourself.
