The latest movie in the Fast Saga is out now in many cinema formats including 4DX but I checked out F9 in IMAX for this F9 IMAX review of the continuing Fast and the Furious Franchise.
Dom Toretto is living the quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, but they know that danger always lurks just over the peaceful horizon. This time, that threat forces Dom to confront the sins of his past to save those he loves most. His crew soon comes together to stop a world-shattering plot by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered — Dom’s forsaken brother.
F9 (Fast & Furious 9) takes us back to the early days of the Torreto family with series of flashbacks with a young Dom, his brother and his father at the speedway track along with other flashbacks that keep to the family theme of the previous Fast Saga movies, these are nicely done and the young Dom is played by Vinnie Bennett and he certainly has that Dom sounding voice that we have come to know from Vin Diesel.
The Fast and the Furious movies have certainly moved a long way away from the first movie of Brian O’Connor (the late Paul Walker) playing the undercover cop infiltrating the street racing scene, now the movies have really gone full on bonkers with outrages stunts, mind-blowing action sequences and complete bonkers ideas that have set the films on that xXx route rather than the street racing.
F9 is no exception with the crazy use of high power magnets in a huge chase sequence that is just so far fetched that you just have one of those WTF moments, but it’s all the craziness, action sequences and the returning cast that make these movies so bonkers that they are silly fun to watch.
I checked out the film in the IMAX screen last night and I was a little disappointed that there weren’t any screen ratio changes to make use of the huge IMAX screen, during the film there are so many opportunities during the film that would have looked great in the IMAX format such as the car swing sequence and the flip of the truck along with other scenes that would have really heightened the IMAX experience.
It’s great to see some of the cast returning to the ninth film in the franchise and to be able to leave the outside world behind for 2h 25min and just have some popcorn movie fun, not the best in the franchise but certainly not the worst.
F9 is certainly bringing the fans back to the cinemas as the news is in that the film sees the highest grossing opening weekend of post-pandemic era at US box office, F9 has grossed $70m (£50.2m) at the US box office after opening last Friday – more than A Quiet Place II which previously held the record at $48.3m (£34.7m).
