It’s hard to think that it’s been 22 years since we were first introduced to the franchise that has now hit its 10th movie, we check out FAST X IMAX and see if the movie is still a rush of action and family as we headed to the IMAX Cineworld in Broughton.
FAST X IMAX starts as it means to go on with all-out action that doesn’t give you much time to catch your breath between the action, the movie starts 10 years ago with the crazy moment that FAST Saga fans will remember as Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) pull off the crazy heist of pulling a large bank vault through the streets, but this isn’t just a chance to relive that bonkers moment, it’s the chance to introduce Dante (Jason Momoa) to the movie.
We then jump to the present day and the craziness continues with plenty of what we have become used to with the franchise, those days of the first movie have well and truly changed over the years. But we still get the fast cars and outlandish stunt driving that has kept petrol heads glued to the franchise, we also get the continued theme of family in FAST X.
Not only is this about the extended family that Dom has built up over the last 22 years, but now it’s about the revenge of family as well as Dante is on the path for revenge for the loss of his father which he blames Dom for, this relentless vendetta to attack Dom where it hurts him most is the premise for the movie and it works very well.
Jason Momoa really stole the movie for me, I wasn’t sure how his character was going to play out when I saw the trailers, but he brings us a character that you love to hate, the sheer anger that he has for Dom has developed into a craziness that kind of gave me a feeling of a role that had that Nic Cage rage and it just plays out wonderfully in the scenes he has. Look out for a scene with Momoa and a couple of his henchmen as he chats with them over mojitos it’s bizarrely funny.
Along with Dante’s comedic moments, we get the comedy that we have come to expect from Roman (Tyrese Gibson) which certainly brought plenty of smiles to my face.
FAST X IMAX has a running time of 2h 21m and as I mentioned earlier the movie is non-stop action, with plenty of car chases, explosions and stunts that do take your breath away, but for me, it just seemed that the movie is more Mission: Impossible/xXx than the franchise used to be in the earlier days, great for those that love a full-blown action movie that doesn’t need much thinking about, a summer movie to kick back with and escape the world for a few hours.
It’s great to see many of the franchise cast returning to the movie and in particular it was great to see Paul Walker in the scene from FAST FIVE and for him still to be part of the franchise after his tragic death in 2013, I have to admit I did find that a little moving. Be prepared to be left on a big cliffhanger and a bit of a wait as FAST X Part 2 is scheduled for 2025, an exact month for the release is yet to be announced.
FAST X IMAX Thoughts
As many of you know I love movies in IMAX, I must point out that although FAST X in IMAX doesn’t have any scenes with the extended aspect ratio, the movie is formatted especially for the IMAX screens and it looks stunning. The movie looks so crisp and the sound is amazing, with any movie on the IMAX screens the sound is booming, and the sound of the engines of the cars is certainly something you don’t want to miss in IMAX, you really get the feeling of being there as the car rev up, race along the streets and burn rubber.
FAST X in IMAX is certainly the option I would take if I was going to see the movie again.
Does FAST X have any post-credit scenes?
Yes, it does, just after the first section of credits. I won’t give too much away but it does include a character that was in several of the movies in the Fast Saga and was in the spin-off movie. The scene sets us up for FAST X part 2 (or FAST XI).
