The Shape has returned to our screens this October as Halloween Kills takes us back to Haddonfield as Michael Myers is still on a murderous spree of the American town and isn’t going to be stopped from doing what he does best!
This new chapter in the long-running Halloween franchise takes us back to 2018 where we left off in Halloween (2018) as Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), Karen (Judy Greer) and Allyson (Andi Matichak) have defeated Michael for one last time or so they think!
Halloween Kills has some great moments such a taking us back to 1978 and the night that Dr Loomis (Donald Pleasence) tries to stop Michael from his killing spree and it was great to see Loomis back on the screen, but you may be surprised to know that there is no cleaver CGI to bring the character back to the franchise. Instead, the part is played by Tom Jones Jr. in his first acting role, all due to him having an uncanny resemblance to Donald Pleasence and it’s amazing how much he looks like him.
The Halloween franchise has moved along so much since that first introduction of Myers thanks to John Carpenter and Debra Hill back in 1978, those of us that are fans of the original movie loved it for its suspense and that it didn’t need the gore and blood splatterings to make it one of the best slasher movies of its genre.
Nowadays the movies have become a bit of a gore-fest and Halloween Kills has that 18 certificate screen with a warning in the BBFC card of “Contains strong bloody violence” and it certainly is bloody with Michael Myers stabbing, slashing and gouging eyes in, yes in.
With Halloween Kills continuing from the 2018 movie, it really plays more on the families and victims that have been affected by Michaels’ reign of terror on Haddonfield, Tommy is now grown up, now played by Anthony Michael Hall, and he is on a mission to stop Michael finally. It’s great to see a returning cast member from Halloween (1978) and it almost feels that this film is on a ride to set up what could be the final chapter in the new trilogy next year with Halleen Ends which is also directed by David Gordon Smith.
This may not be the best in the franchise but it works well to follow on from the 2018 movie, if you love your gore then this is one that you will enjoy, but it doesn’t seem to pull you into the story as well as the 1978 movie, it will be interesting to see where the next film will take us and if it will in fact be the “end” of Halloween, only time will tell.
But for now, this latest movie in the franchise is a movie that works for what it is, although I would have loved to have seen Jamie Lee Curtis kick some backsides, maybe Halloween Ends with give us a Strode vs Myers face-off, fingers crossed.
