The Suicide Squad was the movie I couldn’t wait to see and one that I just had to head over to Cineworld in Broughton to check out on their IMAX screen.
With James Gunn behind the helm of the movie as writer/director, I had my hopes high that The Suicide Squad would wipe the floor with the rather lacklustre version that we had back in 2016, know the success that Gunn has had with Guardians of the Galaxy it would be interesting to see his take on the collection of superhero misfits.
We are reintroduced to some familiar faces in this latest outing including Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Captin Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and of course Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), along with them we are introduced to a new collection of cons, Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Savant (Michael Rooker), King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Javelin (Flula Borg) and everyone’s favourite psycho, Harley Quinn.
After a very quick recap of the “do the job and get 10 years off your sentence” speech from Waller, the squad are armed and dropped off on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese, suffice to say this all-out action sequence really didn’t go the way I was expecting and with that, it certainly set me up for a movie that would have me laughing out loud and loving every moment of Gunn’s movie.
The Suicide Squad make their way through the jungle to complete their mission set by Waller and as you would expect things really don’t go the way they are planned, but with anything that James Gunn puts his hand to the movie is done with his unique style of action and writing which lead to some amazing set pieces as the action and the bloodshed gets taken up a notch.
Forget the 2016 movie, this movie is one that should have been made in the first place, the cast for Suicide Squad are brilliant, I loved Idris Elba as Bloodsport and the attitude the character has throughout the film, Stallone voices King Shark and I have to say that the scenes with him in are stolen by him, you can get the gist of those from the red band trailer for the movie.
I was surprised by some of the short screentime for some characters, but I won’t go there as it is a spoiler when it comes to the release, The Suicide Squad is packed to the rafters with action, blood & guts, laughs and something very much lacking from the 2016 version, the number of expletives used from almost all the characters.
Is The Suicide Squad worth seeing in IMAX?
Well hell yeah! Unlike a lot of the IMAX films we see these days where there are several sequences shot with IMAX cameras, such as Black Widow that had scenes that opened up into the IMAX format for big action sequences, The Suicide Squad is shot in its entirety with IMAX®-certified RED cameras which give you that massive viewing format without any of the black lines at the top and bottom of the screen and it looks amazing.
Not only does it look amazing, but the sound really pulls you into the action of the movie, the sound system is so powerful and clear that you can hear so much more when it comes to the action sequence, the bass of the explosions etc also makes you feel the rumble of the low frequency through the seats.
So if you do have an IMAX screen near you that is showing The Suicide Squad then I highly recommend that you check it out.
Is there a post-credits scene?
With many films, these days we are treated to a post-credit scene and The Suicide Squad is no exception, but I won’t be telling you what the scene is as it is a spoiler, but stay right to the very end of the credits for the scene.
