I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since we were first introduced to the genre-changing horror that had us all on the edge of our seats with the shock and gore. Now, 25 years later, we get Final Destination: Bloodlines, which takes us back to the start of Death’s journey to fix the moments that stop Death from completing its horrific tasks.
The latest instalment in New Line Cinema’s successful and gruesome franchise takes audiences back to the origins of Death’s twisted sense of justice. College student Stefanie, burdened by a violent and recurring nightmare, returns home in search of the one person who may be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly fate that awaits them all.
I’ve been a fan of the Final Destination movies since the first movie in the cinema back in 2000, and it blew me away with the ingenious way that Death came for those that it had missed the chance to get thanks to the premonition by Devon Sawa’s character on the plane that is blown to smithereens.
Over the years and the many sequels, and a prequel, we have been given some rather gruesome moments with the deaths of the characters but one thing that always stuck in the back of my mind was was there more to the story of why death was doing this and was there something a little more to the back story. After Final Destination 5, which was set just before the first film, we learned that the first film wasn’t the first time that Death had missed out on the souls due to a premonition.
Now, 25 years later, we are taken back to 1968 to what seems to be the first time that someone had a premonition of a disaster and saved many people that would be hunted down and their souls taken by Death. But there is much more to this, as the Skytower disaster in the beginning, which I have to say looks and sounds amazing in IMAX with the use of the sound system and the IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio to take us into the action, is only the start of many years of bloodlines being hunted down by Death including those of the five Final Destination movies over the years.
After the stunning premonition in 1968, we jump forward to the present day and meet the family that death is now going after, who are connected with the families of 1968, and we get treated to some pretty spectacular deaths. Still, hey, it wouldn’t be a Final Destination movie without some of the wildest deaths in movie history!
One of the things I loved about Final Destination: Bloodlines in IMAX was the use of the E.A.R. Whenever death is about to make an appearance and take out a character, the screen expands to the full IMAX size. Instead of just switching formats, the black bars on the screen slowly pull back to reveal the IMAX Expanded Aspect Ratio. This is great because it prepares you for some gory craziness.
I loved the way that this new movie connects all the previous movies and brings them in the franchise with it, not just being another movie, but one that gives us a connection to all the movies. It’s very cleverly done and works very well. We even get some little red herrings and twists that just keep you on your toes from start to finish.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is a must-see for any fan of the franchise, and to top it all we get a last moment to spend time with the late and great Tony Todd. In a rather moving scene, as we are in the mortuary, JB (Todd) has a moment that is very moving and even more so when you know that the line that he produces is from himself for the fans. JB says, “Life is precious. Enjoy every single second. You never know when.” The line certainly brought a tear to my eye, and it was wonderful to see Tony in his last role that also brought a close to his character as well, when we learn about the back story and why JB is a recurring character in the franchise.
