It was a second night out in a row for us and a chance to catch the new Rom-Com Fly Me To The Moon courtesy of the Cineworld Unlimited Screening, the film stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum.
“Fly Me To The Moon” is a sharp, stylish comedy-drama set against the high-stakes backdrop of NASA’s historic Apollo 11 moon landing. The story revolves around marketing expert Kelly Jones (played by Johansson) who is brought in to fix NASA’s public image. Sparks fly as she clashes with launch director Cole Davis (played by Tatum), making his already difficult task even more challenging. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is instructed to stage a fake moon landing as a backup plan, intensifying the countdown to the launch.
This was a film that I had been looking forward to for a while, not simply for the great cast but also for the idea that the story is based around the time that the world watched as the two superpowers were racing to land on the moon. Fly Me To The Moon certainly has a great look and sound of the late ’60s, the costumes look amazing as does the cinematography from start to finish. Add to this the superb soundtrack from Daniel Pemberton (Enola Holmes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) we are not only treated to wonderful visuals but music that I loved as soon as the first piece of music came on. It all adds to making Fly Me To The Moon an enjoyable film.
When it comes to the cast I was blown away by how Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum bonded so well on the screen and I enjoyed their portrayal of the characters. Tatum was great to watch as Cole Davis who was coping with not only being unable to become an astronaut due to his health, but he was also coping with a rather rambunctious Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) who has been brought in by Moe Berkus (brilliantly played by Woody Harrelson) on the presidents request to help make the Apollo mission more viable to the public and to makes sure that if the moon landing fails then an alternative option is put in to place to make sure that the world sees a man on the moon.
Fly Me To The Moon has some wonderful comedic moments such as some great scenes with a black cat and the back-and-forth between Johansson and Tatum is so much fun to watch as they start to get along with each other, but as a Rom-Com, they also start to fall for each other.
This is a film which is fun to watch and has some nice touches as original footage from the news etc from the time that the Apollo mission was happening. The special effects also look great with the Apollo 11 rocket taking off and much more. Director Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon) has brought us a film that I enjoyed from start to finish, heck I may have to go and see it again.
If you want a bit of ’60s nostalgia and a bit of a workout for the chuckle muscles, go check out Fly Me To The Moon when it lands in UK cinemas with some see-it-first dates on July 6 & 7 and then in Cinemas everywhere on July 11.
