It was a welcome return to the cinema yesterday with Godzilla vs Kong in IMAX at Cineworld in Broughton, I’d resisted the temptation of watching the film on Sky TV as I wanted to see the movie in a way that would show off the action, visuals and the sound and IMAX is the way to go for all that.
The new titan movie from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures is directed by Adam Wingard and seen the legends collide in “Godzilla vs Kong” as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans—instigated by unseen forces—is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.
So settling down in my seat in the IMAX I got ready for what I was hoping would be an amazing experience to return to the cinemas, to be honest, I found being back the cinema a little emotional as the IMAX countdown started and the sound blasted out in the room making the low rumble through the seats remind me of what I was about to experience.
When it comes to Godzilla Vs Kong the film is really simple and the title says it all, but unlike the previous movies such as Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters this movie really has punch, we learn that Kong is still on Skull Island that is now a Monarch Outpost but something just isn’t right and as Kong rips out a tree and makes it into a crude spear we learn what that is. I won’t go into details as Godzilla Vs Kong is a film to go into without knowing too much, which is what I did.
This is a movie that really needs to be seen on the big screen and the bigger the better, I’m so glad I didn’t watch it at home and waited for the cinemas to reopen, the effects of both Kong and Godzilla are amazing, the large screen just gives you the immense size of the titans as the story unfolds, the scenes on the ships as Kong is transported looks and sounds great as the rain lashes down your are pulled into the film as the sound of the rain is all around you.
Godzilla Vs Kong is a movie that you don’t have to think hard while you are watching it, it’s one of those films that you can sit down to and just enjoy the ride, I did feel that the film is more Kong that Godzilla but that worked and we get to find out a little more, not much more, about Kong and where he came from.
It was great to see Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler reprise their roles as Madison and Mark Russell, but again characters take a bit of side step for the titans, Kaylee Hottle was great as Jia and there is a scene where the sound production takes into what she hears, Kaylee from an all-Deaf family, the sound design just works so well, if you’ve seen Sound of Metal then you will know the sort of thing I’m on about. Jia and Kong have such a great relationship through the film.
Unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters and it’s rather subdued imaging of the titans, Godzilla Vs Kong looks great when it comes to the titans going toe to toe, the colours are vibrant the sound is heart pounding and the action just pulls you in, I was on the edge of my seat during many of the bug set pieces.
Personally, for me, Godzilla Vs Kong was a fantastic film to head back to the cinemas to see, it’s almost 2 hours of movie that has allowed me to re-escape to a far off world and just enjoy myself with some titan-tastic action, if you love your titans and have an IMAX near you then it’s worth checking out.
