Another movie night and another Cineworld Unlimited Screening and the latest on the list for January is Greed starring Steve Coogan and a big selection of famous faces in Michael Winterbottom’s look at how the world of how capitalism distances the rich from the real world of the problems that they can add to.
Greed tells the story of self-made British billionaire Sir Richard McCreadie, whose retail empire is in crisis. For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion, bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street. But after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicised and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos.
After seeing the trailers for Greed I wasn’t overly sure about the movie, but I have to say that Steve Coogan has certainly brought a character to life on the screen that you will love to hate, Sir Richard McCreadie or Rich McGreedy as he is known by many on the film certainly comes across as one that has one aim in life, to make as much money as he possibly can with not a care in the world for who he may be hurting and making it by any means possible. From using the “sweatshops” abroad with the woman working for under £5 a day to make clothes cheaper to make him more money, to taking over businesses in unscrupulous ways that he makes millions and the companies go into debt for hundreds of millions!
Greed is a movie that there are people out there making all this money from tax-dodging schemes that even Coogan’s character likens to a magic trick that works and he makes the most of his “talent”. The moments throughout the film of the wealth of the tax-dodging millionaires are sickening in parts as they abuse the pure for their lifestyles.
But with all the stuff that is going on with McCreadie, Greed is a rise and fall story, let’s face it no matter how rich you are, things must always come to an end and they do!
Greed features some great UK Cast including David Mitchell as McCreadie’s biographer who takes through the McCreadie’s life as he slowly starts to see what McCreadie really is and the secret behind how he has become so rich.
This is a film that I wasn’t sure what to expect after seeing the trailers and I do have to admit that during the Unlimited Screening I did find myself laughing with several other audience members at a few lines from Mitchell and Coogan, maybe they weren’t the lines that you should live at, but they did seem to be funny in the context of the movie, what can I say sometimes laughter is infectious!
So Greed is probably not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m glad that I took the time to check it out at Cineworld.
Greed was out in UK cinemas 21 February 2020 and is out on Digital Download & keep 15th June and on Blu-ray and DVD 29th June.
