Back in 2017, I caught the comedy action movie The Hitman’s Bodyguard at its Cineworld Unlimited screening and today I got the chance to catch the sequel in IMAX at Cineworld in Broughton.
So the other night I sadly missed seeing the unlimited screening of Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard maybe it was fate as I booked to see the film in IMAX at Cineworld in Broughton and I have to say that the IMAX experience is certainly one that takes you to a new level when it comes to seeing an action movie on the big screen.

The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stands between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas). Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman as…well, you’ll have to see.

I wasn’t sure how this sequel to the 2017 movie would play out but the movie takes the comedy that bit further and there were several times that I found myself laughing out rather loudly at many of the scenes in the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, it certainly doesn’t take itself as seriously as the previous movie, but the connection between Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Heyak works brilliantly with the set pieces is not only the comedy but also the action sequences that look and sound amazing on the IMAX screen, the explosions and gunshots rumbled the seats with the bass pumping through the IMAX speaker system that really adds to the effect of being placed in the middle of the action.
Although the story for the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a simple one, rich tycoon wants to take over the world, it’s the overall action of the film that carries it along at a breakneck pace, the movie is one that you can sit back and enjoy while sipping on your drink and snacking on your popcorn, it’s purely a movie that we can have so much fun watching and to enjoy, yes some reviews have been a little harsh on the release but if you love a laugh and action then you can’t go far wrong.
The returning cast works well with the film, I’m a fan of Ryan Reynolds and although almost everything seems to sound like Deadpool (but that no bad thing), it’s great seeing him back with Samuel L Jackson who is great as the extremely foul-mouthed Hitman Kincaid, the pair bounced off each other so well in the first release and they do the same in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

Adding to the mix we have more comedy from Salma Heyak as Mrs Kincaid and her undying devoted love for her husband, so much so that she is desperate to have a child with him, which does entail some rather OMG scenes with the pair having sex while Bryce (Reynolds) is close by or in the boot of the car.
Salma Hayek certainly blasts on the F-Bombs as well, so if you are offended by swearing in the movies that you are no doubt going to be very offended with this one, but the three of them just react amazingly together on the screen.
When it comes to the villain of the movie, we have Antonia Banderas and he plays it very well as he tries to take over the world, he certainly steals the scenes he is in.

Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is an all-out action-packed, crazy and in parts bloody movie, if you loved the first film you are going to love this one, but if you weren’t a fan then it’s probably not going to be for you. If you’ve not seen the Hitman’s Bodyguard then check that out first so that you know the characters and if you enjoy that, then go see this one and check it out in IMAX.
