So it was another trip over to Broughton for the viewing of IT Chapter Two at the Cineworld IMAX last night, a movie that I’ve been bursting like a red balloon to see since the end of the first IT movie and how could you watch IT, but in IMAX!
IT Chapter Two is set 27 years after the “losers” defeated IT back in Derry, now all but one of the members remain in the town, the rest of the group have forgotten so much of what happened back in Derry, an effect of leaving the town and maybe that’s a good thing, as they have all got on with their lives and for most it’s been very much what life should be.
But as Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) never left, all those terrifying moments of Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) are still with him and after an incident at the local funfair when Pennywise returns to start feeing again, IT leaves a message for the “Losers” amidst a barrage of red balloons and that message is simple, “Come Home”.
Mike gets in touch with his friends to come back to Derry, this, in turn, starts to trigger memories of the fear that Pennywise distilled on them as kids, but Beverley (Jessica Chastain), Bill (James McAvoy), Richie (Bill Hader), Ben (Jay Ryan) and Eddie (James Ransone) drop everything and return to Derry.
IT Chapter Two – Back to Derry
Back in 2017, IT was one of my favourite movies and the fear factor was high with that one when it finished and we were teased with the IT Chapter Two, I have to say that I couldn’t wait for the release to come around, plus the news that it was going to be released in IMAX had me itching to see the movie even more.
One key problem with the anticipation of a movie like this is the “hype” feeling you get, is the movie going to be as good as you hoped, how will it play out and most of all is the 169 minutes of run time going to drag along.
Thankfully with IT Chapter Two, I was very pleased with the outcome of the second chapter, it’s great to see superb casting for the grown-up kids and particular for me Bill Hader plays Richie Tozier brilliantly and has brought Finn Wolfhard’s younger version to fruition in the adult version. As with all the cast, they are well-chosen and work very well together, much like the young cast did in IT (2017).
With the use of some well-placed flashbacks throughout the IT Chapter Two, the 169 minutes fly by, I found myself completely engulfed into the movie and enjoyed everyone minute of it, I don’t think you can compare it to IT (2017), but IT Chapter Two certainly ramps up the humour with many a one-liner coming from Richie (Bill Hader) to break the tension, that’s not to say that the movie isn’t scary, there are several moments that may make you jump, but mainly it’s scenes that creep you out, such as the old woman scene when Beverly (Jessica Chastain) visits her old apartment and a scene under the bleachers with Pennywise in the shadows.
Topping off the movie is the battle sequences with Pennywise, those that have seen the IT from 1990 with Tim Curry, will remember this, but with modern technology and advancements in special effects this looks great and didn’t let us down.
IT Chapter Two – An IMAX Experience
The IMAX release of IT Chapter Two is digitally remastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR technology.
The huge screen certainly adds to the effect of the ariel shots of Derry, the moments of Pennywise’s appearance in several scenes and of course the “battle”. The sound is also a factor hear for the movies as well, with great usage of the rear and side speakers putting you smack bang in the middle of everything that is happening, plus you pick up on those crepy sounds from behind you an it more and I don’t mean the nervous gigglers you may have sitting behind you.
