John Wick Chapter 2 – Non-Stop Action All The Way with Baba Yaga! – Review
After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.
How do you top a movie that has Keanu Reeves in probably one of the best roles he has been given in years? Well you make a “Chapter 2” and you make it even more exciting, action-packed and a thrill seeker’s dream right from the moment that the film starts and then doesn’t give up on the aforementioned action!Winston: You stabbed the devil in the back. With many of the cast from the previous movie returning, well the ones that survived! John Wick Chapter 2 see Wick (played by Keanu Reeves) returning to the violence and mayhem and finds that there is a bounty on him now for a job that he was coerced into taking, not the best of times for him!
So with familiar faces returning to the second movie including Ian McShane as Winston, Lance Reddick as the hotel desk clerk Cheron and John Leguizamo as car mechanic Aurelio, the movie certainly keeps you in the world that the first movie brought to us, yet again the characters work well for Chapter 2 and keep the idea of this cut-throat do or die mentality fresh in the minds of the audience.
With the action from the opening sequence of the movie setting you in the mood for the ride of your life, we see John Wick in high-octane fashion attempting to retrieve his ’69 Mustang from Russian crime tsar (played by Peter Stormare), in the process he kicks the backside of that many guys that I lost count, but wow what a brilliant choreographed fight sequence to start the movie with.
As the movie progresses and the fight sequences come more often and the gunshots ring out all over the cinema as the DD7.1 sound bounced them here, there, and everywhere, we see more of the world that we were introduced in the first movie.Remember the Continental? Remember the Continental? The hotel which was a safe haven Wick, well in this movie, the idea of the safe hotel is expanded on and we find that there are many of these possibly scattered all over the world and as John heads to Rome, we are introduced to another of them which is run by Julius (Played by Franko Nero, yes folks the original Django runs the place).
With Wick not being able to retire due to the marker that he has and his debt that has to be cleared, he is thrown into the power play that is happening between brother and sister for the seat that is at the “High Table“, but as with any good thriller/action movie all starts going pear-shaped for Wick with him being hunted down by Ares (Played by Ruby Rose, who we last saw in The Return of Xander Cage).John Wick: So I guess you have a choice. Do you want a war or do you want to just give me a gun?Click To Tweet
Wick goes underground and enlists the help of Bowery King (played by Laurence Fishburne), I have to admit I did have a Matrix flashback at this point and expected him to produce a red or blue pill, but Fishburne and Reeves have a great chemistry on screen during their short screen time and it also adds an interesting backstory to the world of John Wick.
If you enjoyed the first movie then you are going to love this, there is so much more going on in John Wick Chapter 2, more fights, stunts and a great sounding soundtrack, look out for the live band during a scene in Rome.
John Wick Chapter 2 Official Trailer
Overall the movie is non-stop action, it is a movie that is worthy of being a sequel to the first film, with the news that a “Chapter 3” could be set in London, it looks like we are going to get to see more from Keanu Reeves as John Wick. Director Chad Stahelski has done a great job on the film, very much like he did on the first one, let’s hope he can bring his style of filmmaking to the reboot of the Highlander film that he is also directing.
