The other night was the Cineworld Unlimited Screening of Knives Out which is out today in cinema, a movie that had such an amazing cast that just that list alone is something that will pull you into this modern-day Whodunit on the big screen.
Upon entering the screening we were gifted with some rather delicious Galaxy Hazlenut chocolate to enjoy during the film, probably not the best thing to have in a warm cinema, but it was very tasty.
Before the film started we were greeted on the screen by director Rian Johnson (Looper, The Last Jedi) and asked not to spoil the ending of the film to those that would be seeing it after the screening, so don’t expect to find who the killer was in this review as I’m not going to tell you!
Knives Out is a movie that has that real Agatha Christie feel to it and that’s just from the opening credits and the music that accompanies them as we first lay eyes upon the Thrombey family mansion, as with any Whodunit a murder has been committed and Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead in his room, but who could have committed such a heinous crime in this idyllic country manor!
To solve the crime Lieutenant Elliott (LaKeith Stanfield) and Trooper Wagner (Noah Segan) are brought in to question the family and what a family they are, all with their own motives and pleas of innocence, Elliott and Wagner are also joined by Super-Sleuth Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a sort of American Poirot with a taste for solving crime and cigars!
It’s down to the three of them to go through the evidence and the family to find if Harlan’s death was indeed foul-play or suicide, but as the investigation movies along there are twists and turns, the occasional red herrings and ideas that the Thrombey family are more conniving and mischevious than they first seem.
I have to say that with its brilliant cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas and of course Christopher Plummer, Knives Out, for me is one of the best Whodunit movies that I have seen for a long time on the big screen, I’ve seen many theatre productions in this genre and the last movie that I saw like this that had me as excited as Knives Out was Clue with Tim Curry.
This is a movie that has everything you could want from the genre, the mystery, the shifty money-grabbing family, the backstabbing and of course the intrigue of who committed the crime in the first place, yes there are those moments when you do start putting one and one together yourself, but with the subtle twists and turns in Knives Out it still keeps you guessing.
The cinematography in and outside the Thrombey mansion looks brilliant the cast all perform superbly for their characters and Rian Johnson certainly brings out the intrigue and mystery out of them on the big screen, not only does the film look good, but it also sounds good, the soundtrack from Nathan Johnson (Looper, Don Jon) works perfectly throughout Knives Out giving the feel of a true Whodunit.
With plenty of laugh out load moments, the mystery of Harlan’s murder to keep you glued to the screen, the 130min running time of Knives Out just flies by, so if you fancy something a little different, then check out the film.
