When I asked Lou Yardley why she chose to write about Dinosaurs and what we can expect from the book she gave me the following response.
I loved dinosaurs when I was a child. I had loads of toys, had vivid dreams about Jurassic Park and truly believed that I’d be able to befriend a t-rex if I ever met one (the thought that it would probably eat me never crossed my innocent little mind). While my interest in dinosaurs never grew beyond knowing a few names and characteristics, it never disappeared. If a film or book has dinosaurs in it, I’m immediately interested. There’s just something about them, isn’t there? It’s mind-blowing to think that these incredible creatures walked the earth millions of years before us… and it kinda makes you wonder what’s going to show up long after we’ve gone. If we haven’t completely destroyed the planet before we check out, of course…
As well as being my excuse to write about (and read about!) dinosaurs for a couple of months, Rise of the Carnivores is also my ode to the B-Movie. I love horror and sci-fi done on a tight budget. As the filmmakers are not reliant on expensive effects or big-name actors, they have to rely on decent storytelling to keep people watching. Sure, it’s not always successful… but when it is, it’s something magical.
The makers of B-Movies are also not afraid to go completely “out there”. Bending the rules of reality (or just outright destroying them) is something that I adore. It’s pure, unadulterated escapism. Real life can be dull. Or terrible. But films that defy reality can take you away from all of that – even if it’s just for an hour and a half. That’s what I’m hoping to achieve with “Rise of the Carnivores”: escapism.
