Another Friday night and a chance to head on over to Cineworld IMAX in Broughton to check out Maleficent: Mistress of Evil the sequel to the 2014 Disney movie starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning.
Maleficent (Jolie) and her goddaughter Aurora (Fanning) begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and dark new forces at play.
Most of the cast has returned for the sequel, with exception of the role of Prince Philip whos is now being played by Harris Dickinson who took over the role of from Brenton Thwaites due to scheduling conflicts with Titans (2018), but this doesn’t distract you from the film, let’s face it the previous movie was five years ago!
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a lavish-looking movie the opening sequence itself with the camera flying through the land across the water looks stunning on the IMAX screen, which really immerses you in the feeling of being there, the set designs really bring the magical world to life as do the myriad of faes that live in the magical kingdom.
I have to say that back in 2014 when the first Maleficent movie came out, I enjoyed it, but I enjoyed the sequel so much more, I think it comes down to those subtle changes in the technology of the animation of the characters and of course seeing the movie in IMAX, which works extremely well and not just for the screen but also for the being immersed in the sound that IMAX has.
When it comes to film like this, Disney certainly knows how to bring them to life, although a rather simple story of love, hate and war, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has many comical moments and it’s always nice to hear a cinema audience laughing together during a screening.
The casting for the movie is spot on, obviously, with the cast returning for this sequel it has to be right and it all works to bring the story to the screen, I loved the role of King John (Robert Lindsay) and it’s always great to Warwick Davies in a fantasy movie, Michelle Pfeiffer plays Queen Ingrith so well that you really want to hate the character and let’s not forget the brilliant Chiwetel Ejiofor as Conall.
If you enjoyed the first movie then you will enjoy this one so much more, yes there are those predictable moments, but there are in most movies, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is so much better than the 2014 film, the battle sequence looks and sounds amazing in IMAX and certainly has you on the edge of your seat.
