We headed back to the 1980s with the final instalment of Ti West’s X trilogy with MaXXXine starring Mia Goth reprising her role from 2022s X, we headed out to Cineworld to check out the new movie and to see how it holds up to the previous two movies.
In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. However, as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Los Angeles, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
MaXXXine follows on from X (2022) and although we were treated to the prequel with Pearl (2022) we have left that movie behind us now we have hit the 1980s and this movie certainly packs a punch when it comes to the soundtrack that gives us not only some great tracks from the 80s but most of them are ones that we all know and love.
Fans of the first two movies in the trilogy have a good idea of what they are going to get with MaXXXine although I have to say that compared to the other films this one did seem a little tame. Still, there was a ball-busting scene and I did hear a few guys in the cinema gagging a bit!
Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) is on the path to stardom and that’s her main aim of the film, but in the background, there is the Night Stalker on a killing spree and the murders that are happening in Maxine’s life could be him or someone else that she could be connected to. This storyline moves along nicely with the rest of what is going on as we follow Maxine from her time in porn movies which she was starting in X to becoming a movie star and being famous.
There is some great casting in MaXXXine including Kevin Bacon as the seedy detective John Labet who is one of those characters that you love to hate but makes the you love his portrayal even move. Giancarlo Esposito plays Maxine’s agent Teddy Night, Esq. I loved his role which was fun to watch. Let’s not forget the brilliant Elizabeth Debicki as the filmmaker Elizabeth Bender who we are introduced to early on in the film in the opening scene that carried on from the previous movies with the opening of the barn doors, but this time with the large doors of a film studio.
Of the three movies I still think I prefer Pearl, but that’s not to say that MaXXXine is a bad film on the contrary it’s very much on par with X and works very well as it is the continuation of that first film in the X trilogy. If you are a fan of the movies, you will want to catch this on the big screen for its loud use of the great 80s music and the conclusion to the films.
