Ok folks those of you that read Blazing Minds will have seen my preview I wrote about the Broadway show Memphis that was coming to several Apollo Cinemas across the UK and last night I got to see the show.
Memphis – His Vision, Her Voice, The Birth Of Rock ‘N Roll
Just to recap, the show is a stage show on the big screen filmed on Broadway and is the story set in the 1950’s, with Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) going in to an underground Beale Street Club to soak up the sounds of rhythm ‘n’ blues, the only white man in the club!
What we have is 145 minutes of a brilliant musical as we see Huey, bringing black music to a white audience via the radio airwaves and a love story of him falling for Felicia (Montego Glover).
Broadway On The Big Screen
First of all I do have to say this is the first time that I have ever seen a stage play on a cinema screen and it was almost as if I was there with the audience in Broadway, the camera work was fantastic, the sets were superb (specially the way they changed and moved around seamlessly), the audio mix was amazing with a brilliant use of 7.1 digital surround sound and the picture was crystal clear which was filmed in high-definition.
The music was top-notch as was those that were singing and acting and I do have to point out that as soon as Montego Glover opened her mouth for her first song, I was blown away with the powerful voice that came out.
Chad Kimball was great with the way he swaggered around the stage and the strange way he spoke, but even his singing voice was a surprise and when duetting with Montego Glover the two fitted perfectly together.
If You Missed It You Missed Out
For me seeing this brilliant show on the big screen was a fantastic experience and those that did miss this one night only showing at their local Apollo Cinema have really missed something special.
The show had me laughing, tapping my toes to the music and just thoroughly enjoying every minute of the 145 minute show.
I would love to see more like this at my local Apollo Cinema, it’s just so nice to see something different from movies all the time.
So that’s a big thumbs up to the Apollo Cinemas for this amazing show and also a big thumbs up for Memphis.
