Bad Hare Day is a terrifying 2021 short indie horror film written and directed by Jonathon Patrick Hughes. It stars Joshua Brooks (Back Fork 2019), Samantha A. All hell breaks loose after a father is bitten by a bunny rabbit he brought home for his daughter as an early Easter gift, transforming him into a hideous man-sized were-rabbit.
This is a fantastic short film full of kick-ass action, amazing gore, and one of the coolest most grotesque practical effects monsters in years. The filmmakers have taken one of the most beloved and sacred mythical/religious entities in the Easter Bunny and turned it into pure nightmare fuel, which is likely to terrify viewers for a very long time to come. It’s gruesome, hilarious, and disturbingly horrific.
Based on a comic created by Jonathon Patrick Hughes, this illustrated movie mashup starts off a bit slow before really picking up steam. The costumes are great and the special effects are terrific. Also, the music is awesome and really helps add to the intensity of it, and the editing is excellent. There’s not much to the story, however, as it’s simple – man gets bit and inadvertently transforms into a hideous killer beast of some sort – tale, but regardless the film is still egg-citing, engaging, and eggs-tremely entertaining.
Aside from a few strong performances, including David E. McMahon and Samantha A. Camp, the acting is just so so. The lighting isn’t the best either, as some scenes are so dark it’s hard to make out what’s actually going on. I understand the motive behind it; to aid in concealing flaws mainly attributed to the budget, although in a production such as this, it’s arguable that those types of minor defects would more than likely lend to the campiness of it all. And, when it comes to blood, the more the merrier, they always say, which definitely wasn’t the case here – another possible misstep.
In conclusion, Bad Hare Day 2021 is sick, twisted, and one hare of a good time. A smashing new Easter cult classic. It’s clever, creative, and one creepy-ass creature feature. Give it a spin if you get the chance, it’s guaranteed to be a cracking good time.
