It was Saturday 29th February 2020. And it was that time again, time to see The Montagues down at The Salty Dog in Northwich.
The Salty Dog is a lovely, not very big pub, that has an amazing atmosphere, and great staff at the bar. The support started us off for the night and they were Liverpool’s Skinner’s Lane who are made up of Californian, Norwegian and British individuals, with a reputation for their electric live sets, and outlandish, chaotic stage performances. Fair play to these lads, they put their heart and soul into their performance that night. The energy that came off them was something else. They bounced on and off stage with their instruments and kept the crowd entertained. You can see how much they enjoy performing. Another great band that was truly entertaining.
Then the main act came on The Montagues, and the crowd go wild (woohoo). Kicking off the night with Devils(boss tune). The Montagues had the crowd dancing and singing along to their songs. I always love their set of songs when they come on. Lyrics that stick in your head for a lifetime, and have so many different meanings to them. In the middle of the set, we were again treated to their amazing soft rock ballad “Lonely”, when I first heard this, I was blown away. The sound is quality, but lyrics again immense. This song gives me goosebumps. Really strikes a chord with you.
The Montagues played all their great hits off their album Calibrate, as well as “Lonely”, which isn’t on the album, and also “Ideology”, which is very much a rock headbanging tune, and also that one isn’t on the album, but hopefully released to download or buy in the future(top tune lads!). Along with a classic “throwing your hands in the air” to the great track that is “red light”. When they had finished, as usual, we always want more, and we were very much treated to one of their brand new tracks “You”. Again what a tune! It is a song that is beautifully written and is one for bouncing around too.
The lads are soaring at this moment, and what I love about this band, they totally appreciate the effort their fans go to, to go see them. They will have a chat with you, so down to Earth. Never lose the lads when you hit the bigger gigs! They are completely original, write their own songs and music, and their experiences in life are told through their music. It is totally therapeutic music, from the soul. Absolute genius!
It was a great night of meeting up with other people too. I met and chatted to the legend Oli Harman, responsible for photography, and the amazing videography he did recently on The Montagues “You Got it All (wrong)”. What a nice fella, down to earth, and totally enjoys watching and filming the lads in action.
Also caught with a couple of the guys from another unsigned band Cry. What a great bunch of lads. See this is what I love about these unsigned bands around at the moment. They all support one another, help each other out, and see each other performances on stage. It’s a great atmosphere to be in, and nice to see that there’s no rivalry between them, just their love of music and supporting each other with it.
Cannot wait for the next gig, and it’s over in Chester at Alexander’s on 12th March, where The Montagues will be performing with legendary Liverpool band The Banshees. It’s gonna be epic yet again!
