Right then, yesterday I finally got the chance to get to see Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a movie that I wasn’t too sure about but in the end, was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the movie.
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
We’ve seen movies made based on toys before, but the Barbie movie takes the idea on a whole new plain. Barbieland is beautifully brought to the big screen and it’s everything that you would expect from the world of the dolls from Mattel.
Life is brilliant for all the Barbies, but not so much for the Kens though, the Barbies are happy with life and each of them living in a Barbie Dream House and they know that the real world is safe in the hands of all the young girls that have grown up to become doctors, lawyers, builders and many more occupations that the dolls have brought us over the years.
But Barbie (Margot Robbie) isn’t the same as she used to be and something is very wrong, so she decides to venture into our world to find the doll’s owner to see why she is feeling the way she is. With the help of Weird Barbie played by the brilliant Kate McKinnon, she finds a way into our world and discovers that not everything is what she expected, Ken (Ryan Gosling) who tags along also discovers that men have far more control and power than he could ever have imagined and you just know that things aren’t going to go how either of them first expected.
I have to say that I was totally surprised by how much I enjoyed Barbie, right from the start I was chuckling to myself and even at some points laughing out loud, there are plenty of moments that you know you shouldn’t laugh at but just can’t help yourself, such as the “Beach off” scene that!
Greta Gerwig has done an amazing job at bringing the world-famous doll to life on the big screen and the casting is spot-on for all the Barbies and Kens in the movie, even if you aren’t a fan of the doll the movie has everything that you could want for a good entertaining comedy with a great cast including Will Ferrell, new Doctor Who actor Ncuti Gatwa and even John Cena!
The movie also has a fantastic soundtrack that I found myself tapping my feet to on many occasions during my viewing and to top it all musical numbers, I kid you not and they work brilliantly in the movie making it even more of a surprise of how entertaining the movie is.
The effects are great to see as well with a lot of the travel between Babriland and the real world done with some great physical effects as the journey from one world to another even featured the Barbie Campervan and jet-ski!
Barbie the movie isn’t going to be for everyone, but my recommendation would be to give it a shot you may be very surprised, I know I was!

No Barbie doesn’t have a post-credits scene, but if you loved the movie and the music then you may just want to take in the fun credits and listen to great music.
