It’s great being back in the cinemas and this weekend saw the preview screening of the long-awaited The New Mutants at Cineworld, so I grabbed my face mask and headed to Llandudno for the screening.
In a bold and thrilling new direction for the X-Men franchise, a group of young mutants – Dani, Rahne, Illyana, Sam and Roberto – are being held in an isolated hospital, where they are probed and monitored by their shadowy hosts.
But when strange things start happening, their mutant abilities – and their friendships – will be tested to the limit as they battle to escape alive.
I remember back in 2018 posting about the release of The New Mutants, now after a long wait and its five release dates with the last date change due to the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it has finally hit the big screens here in the UK for a preview, it’s official release date is the 4th September.
Now I have to say that I’ve tried to step away from what others have been saying and the overall plot of the film so that I could check it out with a fresh mind, all I’d seen was the trailer, which did have me intrigued by the horror feel that it has.
The New Mutants has been described as a superhero horror film, the first genre film in the series, but for me personally, I would’ve loved to have seen much more of a horror vibe to the film, it does seem very lack-lustre for a horror and it really didn’t appeal to me in that genre.
Sadly I think the film was doomed from the start with all the delays etc that it has gone through, it’s not a very bad movie, it just didn’t seem to work for me. Unlike the early X-Men movies where I enjoyed the characters and what they were going through, I lost interest in them shortly after the rather action-packed opening.
The New Mutants is not going to be for everyone, I enjoyed the action towards the end of the film but that was about it, I do believe that there was going to be a trilogy of films for The New Mutants and maybe that’s why certainly comes across as an introduction movie, but it falls short of being on par with the early X-Men movies, it’s more like Dark Phoenix!
