It’s another Cineworld Unlimited Screening and this time it was the turn of Nobody the new action-packed movie starring Bob Odenkirk, Christopher Lloyd, Connie Nielsen and RZA.
Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) fails to defend himself or his family when two thieves break into his suburban home one night. The aftermath of the incident soon strikes a match to his long-simmering rage. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must now save his wife and son from a dangerous adversary — and ensure that he will never be underestimated again.
So I have to say that after seeing the trailer a while back I was intrigued by this new release from director Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry) and write Derek Kolstad who many will know as the writer of the amazing John Wick movies of which I am a massive fan, that being said Nobody certainly has then John Wick feel to it and while we wait for the release of Chapter 4 next year and Chapter 5, this movie is one that certainly keeps the mind keen for that Wick style action genre.
The opening of the movie is so nicely done with some brilliant editing of Hutch (Odenkirk) going through his mundane life day after day and week after week doing the same things, including missing the trash truck, then one night intruders break in which sparks a side of Hutch that he has hidden for many years. Remember the moment when John Wick’s dog was killed, I won’t spoil too much but suffice to say kitty kat bracelet, that’s all I’m saying.
With that Hutch goes brutal and the what you think is a simple man has a vicious streak that comes out when he takes on some mobsters on a bus in one heck a of a brilliant fight sequence that hand me on the edge of my seat and smiling from ear to ear.
Not only is Nobody packed with some great action it has a fantastic use of the music for the soundtrack as well, with many of the tracks works so well in the scenes and they are ones that most of us know, I ended up singing them in my head and tapping my feet while they were on, but the soundtrack doesn’t distract you from what is going on, much like Baby Driver the music becomes part of what is happening.
Director Ilya Naishuller has put together a movie that will probably become a bit of a cult movie much like John Wick has, this is a movie that have some great editing in the fight scenes and also has camera work that makes the scenes look great, there’s non of that rather sickening hand held camera styles that make you just feel queasy, the scenes are perfectly staged, lit and shot.
When it comes to the cast I can’t fault Bob Odenkirk as the lead role, he just soaks up the screen and brings the character of Hutch to life on the screen, from husband to brutal ass-kicker, he just stole the screen time. It’s always great to see Christopher Lloyd on the screen and he’s great as Hutch’s dad, also lookout for a great scene in the nursing home with some Russian hitmen and in the finale of the movie.
Connie Nielsen plays the understanding wife and although her screen time isn’t that much she certainly brings a great presence to the roll when watching her performance. Keep your eyes peeled for Michael Ironside that was a pleasant surprise to see him back on the cinema screen.
If you love the John Wick movies then Nobody is a great movie to check out, it’s certainly a movie that is going down on my Blu-ray list when it gets a home release in September, but for now, go check out the film when it arrives in UK cinemas on June 9th.
