Sometimes a Cineworld Unlimited Screening comes along that takes you by surprise and Our ladies is certainly one of those films that is a pure delight to watch and this was one of those films.
Set in Scotland in the 1990s, Our ladies is the story of a group of Catholic school girls from the Scottish Highlands town of Fort William who get the opportunity to take a trip to Edinburgh for a choir competition, but as they are teenagers they have other things on their mind such as drinking, partying and hooking up rather than winning the competition.
This film is not your run of the mill coming of age story, it is down to Earth with its characters as the teenage girls are rather foul-mouthed and are looking to their visit as an escape from the school and from Sister Condron (Kate Dickie) or as the girls call her, Sister Condom!
But Our Ladies is not just about the Choir competition, this is a film about the relationship of the friends and their ups & downs as they learn more about each other and put friendship to the test as they spilt up to adventure out to Edinburgh clubs and pubs to have some excitement in their lives, along with this is also the emotional aspect of Orla (Tallulah Greive) who has a reprieve from her Leukaemia and is looking to lose her virginity in a rather unusual way.
Director Michael Caton-Jones (Memphis Belle, Urban Hymn) certainly brings the adaptation of Alan Warner’s 1998 novel The Sopranos to life on the big screen and the cast including Tallulah Greive, Abigail Lawrie (Tin Star), Rona Morison, Sally Messham, Marli Siu, and Eve Austin is a delight to watch.
There are many mixed emotions with Our Ladies from comical moments that have you laughing loudly to the scenes that become more series as characters open their hearts to each other about things that have happened and what they should do, then there are moments that can produce that lonely tear. This film is certainly one that for me has been one of the best films I’ve seen this year (so far).
Throw in the mix of some fantastic 90s music, lovely cinematography of the Scottish Highlands, great characters and a story that keeps you interested and entertained and you have a film that is one that you could watch several times, it’s just a shame that we have had to wait so long for the film to make its way to cinemas all thanks to the pandemic that delayed its theatrical release.
But I have to say that you will have to wait a little longer to check out the film as its UK release date is the 27th of August but believe me, Our Ladies is certainly worth the wait to check out on the big screen.
