We checked out the new release from Lightbulb Film Distribution, the new claustrophobic horror-thriller, Outpost which is the feature-length directorial debut from Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Reno 911!, Superbad) and stars Beth Dover (Orange Is The New Black), Dylan Baker (Trick ‘r Treat) and Becky Ann Baker (A Simple Plan). FrightFest Halloween hosted the UK premiere last year.
Kate seeks to heal past trauma by moving to Idaho and working as a fire lookout volunteer. But alone in the mountains, unable to leave her outpost, she is overwhelmed by isolation and paranoia. To protect the tower, she must discover the truth, confront those responsible and face her own demons.
Director Joe Lo Truglio commented; “Growing up in the 70s and 80s, my love for horror began very early and I can’t wait for a global audience to see this movie. Making Outpost was a 13-year-old’s dream. We’re thrilled to be working with Lightbulb, who share the same passion for the genre.”
Outpost is somewhat of a slow burner but as the film moves along there are some great scenes of Kate’s paranoia that are very shot, the cinematography of the Outpost in some rather nice longshots makes you feel the isolation that Kate has to go through during her stay in the tower.
This is a film that certainly plays on the viewer’s mind and you certainly get to feel the unnerving moments with some nice directing from Joe Lo Truglio that brings out some great performances from the film’s cast.
I’m not sure what I was expecting with the film, I was hoping for more of a horror, but I have to say that the Psychological Thriller aspect of Outpost does work very well as Kate fights her demons, but for me, the film did seem to drag a little and the 1h 24m runtime did seem to be a bit longer than I thought it was.
Truglio has written an interesting story that brings to light the horrors of the mental health of a trauma victim and his directorial debut feature kept me wondering what the outcome would be for Kate, but I was really hoping for more of the horror aspect and I did feel a little disappointed that the movie is listed as a horror.
This is a film that isn’t going to be for everyone, especially the die-hard horror fans, but it’s certainly a film to check out to see Truglio’s feature directorial debut.
