We got the chance to check out another Cineworld Unlimited preview screening, this time the movie was PLANE starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter.
In the white-knuckle action movie PLANE, pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) saves his passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island – only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When most of the passengers are taken hostage by dangerous rebels, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI. In order to rescue the passengers, Torrance will need Gaspare’s help, and will learn there’s more to Gaspare than meets the eye.
So that’s the synopsis for the Plane which comes to UK cinemas on the 27th of January, but is it as “white-knuckle” as the synopsis says? Well sort of, the movie starts off with a happy vibe as Brodie (Butler) is heading through the airport to pilot flight 119 and face timing with his daughter, once on the plane he introduces himself to his co-pilot before greetings the passengers and is informed of an accused murderer is to board on the plane.
Now, this would ring alarm bells with most action movies that this guy is going to take over the plane and cause all kinds of hell, but “Plane” takes us in a direction of a somewhat “disaster movie” in the early part of the movie, as the weather that the plane flies into gets worse and the plane is struck by lightning causing it to land on an island that is controlled by a band of rebels.
As Torrence and Gaspare (Colter) go to look for help they discover that all is not well on the island and after the passengers are taken hostage by the rebels they both try to rescue the hostages and escape the island.
“Plane” does have some moments that will have you on the edge of your seat, but not too much, there are some great choreographed action sequences that work very well for the genre of movie, the story is very simple and it really doesn’t need to do much to get the idea across that Torrence and Gaspare are the heroes of the story, although I would have liked to have seen a little more character development for the two leads. It did seem that Colter’s role could have been so much more and seemed and little subdued for the character, shame as it would have been great to see more of where the character could have gone.
The special effects for the plane in the storm are very nicely done and the sound mix works very well with the sounds of the jungle coming from all the surround speakers so that you have the feeling you are in the middle of the jungle with them, likewise is the sound for the guns firing off with the bullets whizzing past you to the rear and from the rear speakers.
If you are a fan of Gerard Butler and some of the other action movies that he has been in then you will certainly enjoy this one, it’s very much a film that you can go in and enjoy and then not really think about it too much afterwards, as I mentioned earlier the story is simple and it works for the movie, so it may be worth checking out when it hits UK cinemas on the 27th of Januar courtesy of Lionsgate.

If you are a fan of Gerard Butler and some of the other action movies that he has been in, then “Plane” is certainly a movie you may want to check out on the big screen.
