I have to start this review by saying that I was always a LEGO kid, but the time that the Playmobil toys came out, I think it was around 1982, I was passed the toys stage, but still loved LEGO.
Over the last few months, I’ve been seeing the Playmobil: The Movie trailers in the cinema and it looked like one of those movies that I just had to see, plus it was my chance to get back into the flow at Cineworld with my Unlimited Card and start back with my reviews of movies in RealD 3D.
Playmobil The Movie starts off as a conventional live-action movie with Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy, Split) hoping to get away and live her life, the big surprise here, that isn’t seen in the trailer is that we open with a musical number! Yep, that’s right, Playmobil The Movie has a selection of musical pieces, but not too many to overdo it.
In comes her six-year-old brother Charlie (Ryan S. Hill), who she tells not to tell mum and dad about the passport she has got, after a family tragedy, we jump ahead a few years, now Marla is looking guardian to Charlie after he disappears she goes looking for him, only to find him at a “Toy-Con” and a massive exhibition of Playmobil toys, but something magical is about to happen and they get zapped to the world of Playmobil with Vikings, Pirates, Aliens and a tyrannical character voiced by Adam Lambert, Emperor Maximus.
Once in the magical world, Charlie ends up as his Viking character that he played with at the start of the movie and the film becomes one of those where baby brother goes missing and big sister has to find him and save him, while on the journey learning the true meaning that they have for each other.
On Marla’s way to find Charlie, she teams up with Del (Jim Gaffigan) a bit of a washed-out con-man that owes a large amount of money to a gangster and secret agent Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe) and of course plenty of silly antics, lookout for a couple of Star Wars Easter Eggs on the way.
Playmobil The Movie is the directorial debut for Lino DiSalvo, whose previous credits include Frozen, Bolt and Tangled for the Animation department and I have to say that he’s done a great job with this animated movie, it’s very much a kids movie, unlike The LEGO Movie that had those moments that adults got and kids didn’t, Playmobil The Movie is very much a movie for the family and very kid-friendly.
The musical numbers work well for the kids, I’m not a massive fan of those, but thankfully there was only enough to keep it from putting me off. There are some comical moments to the movie, I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions, so that can’t be bad.
As the title of the post says, I went to see Playmobil The Movie in RealD 3D, first of all, it’s great to back in the cinema’s seat for a film in 3D and after looking at the list of upcoming movies, it looks like I’ll be doing loads more. CGI movies always seem to work well in RealD 3D and this one is no exception, thankfully no “point a stick in your face” moments, the depth is nice and the feeling of being in several scenes thanks to the 3D works great.
