I suppose when all other variations on a theme have been exhausted, then you go for the jugular with something that is as obvious as its title, Puppet Killer.
Thus Puppet Killer is just that, a film about a puppet who is also a killer. We’ve seen this before of course in Chucky and his various films, plus puppet killers are nothing new in film … cast your minds back to films like Dead of Night, Trilogy of Terror or the Puppet Master films. Here though we have exactly what it says on the tin. A killer puppet. Not a killer who thinks the puppet is the killer (but it’s really him/her or someone else) but the puppet is literally the killer. That it also looks like a pink Muppet-type creation just adds to the madness of the film!
A group of high school kids decide to spend Christmas in a cabin owned by one of their number, Jamie (Aleks Paunovic), who had an unhappy childhood: horror film-obsessed, his mother died of cancer, and his new step-mom was not supportive of his obsession … so she mysteriously vanishes … Jamie also had a puppet friend, and when this is discovered in the cabin’s basement, and Simon’s medication is accidentally left behind, you just know that things are going to take a turn for the worse …
The kids are all killed in a variety of ways – the puppet has Jamie’s love of horror and so dresses like Freddie, Jason and Michael for the kills – and the survivors are left to try and figure out who the killer actually is!
Overall this is something of a daft film, with a strange premise. If Jamie really was the killer, and the transference of the acts to the puppet was in his head, then that might make more sense … but no, this creature is seen moving and killing by the others … Quite why isn’t really explained … but then this is the sort of film where you put your brain on standby and just enjoy it as it unfolds. It’s enjoyable and well made … but is the world ready for killer puppets that look like Oscar the Grouch?!
