The Purge: Election Year – Blu-ray Review

Today sees the release of The Purge: Election Year on Blu-ray™ and DVD, the third in the franchise of movie that started back in 2013 when the original movie set in the near future where a wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.

In 2014 The Purge: Anarchy was released, now two years later, director and writer James DeMonaco (Assault on Precinct 13, The Negotiator) brings us the third chapter of the franchise.

Based two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a rather regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night, now the latest night is set on the eve of the presidential election. With a nation divided between those that want the Purge and those that don’t.

The Purge Election Year

As the head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), Leo’s task is to protect her during her controversial and contested run to become president. But they are forced o to the streets of Washington D.C. on possibly the one night that they wish they were safe behind locked doors and with no help available, they must fight to stay alive!

The Purge: Election Year

The third in the franchise of movies certainly seems to have the same feel as the earlier movies, with the unnerving feeling that you get as those masked Purgers take control of the streets to do whatever they want without the consequence.

This is an action movie that keeps the action and violence flowing with one the occasional short moment for you to catch your breath between the violence.

The Blu-ray has a crisp look to it, which certainly brings those blood-splattering moments to your attention as does the 5.1 surround sound that is used to good use in scenes with gunfire and explosions.

The movie is certainly one that fans of The Purge movies are going to really enjoy, not only does the movie look and sound good on Blu-ray, but it also comes with some Deleted Scenes, Inside The Purge (which features cast and crew interviews) and a Character Spotlight (A chance to go behind the scenes with Frank Grillo).

The Purge: Election Year is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
