The RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous) team are back in with guns, explosions, nuclear weapons and Anthony Hopkins!
Now before I start this review I have to say that I loved RED (the first movie) it was a refreshing change and had me loving every moment of it, so I was really glad to hear that they were back for RED 2.
Bruce Willis is retired CIA agent Frank Moses and reunited with his team of operatives, Victoria (Helen Mirren) and Marvin (John Malcovich) ready to save the world from a mad man with a nuclear device.
Although probably not as action packed as I hoped it would be, the movie still has some great set pieces and some rather dry and funny humour, mainly coming from Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker.
Directed by Dean Parisot, who is mainly a director from the world of TV and not the big screen and it shows, sometimes RED 2 feels like an extended episode of an action TV series and not a big movie in a cinema.
Helen Mirren is fantastic as Victoria with her relentless lack of feeling for getting the job done and she probably has the highest body count throughout the movie, though I would love to have seen more from her.
Stunts wise, the film is pretty good with some great action sequences and some good camera shots, such as the one with Mirren and Byung-hun Lee in a sports car spinning around and shooting from both windows, kind of reminded me of some of the sequences in “Wanted”.
But the film is fun, it did seem to drag in parts, but this is easily forgiven for with the humour and action that the film has throughout. Also having a great cast of “Thespians” in one movie can’t be bad.
Overall Thoughts For RED 2
Probably not as good as the first film, good action and comedy all rolled in to one neat little package, Helen Mirren is fantastic, Bruce Willis is good in a role that we all expect him to be in and the rest of the cast fit in nicely.
A good night out for giggles and fun.
