I love indie filmmaking and makers. It’s an absolute essential part of the film world that allows the whole thing to carry on. In some cases, low-budget indie films can be genuine slices of cinematic genius.

They can be unique films, with genius stories and incredible casts of unknown actors that have bright futures. They can grab your attention and draw you into their worlds, making you feel like a legitimate part of their world. 

Unfortunately, Reputation was none of these, for me at least. It is a low-budget indie film, but sadly, nothing about it stands out as unique. Nothing about it grabbed my attention with great performances or riveting plot points. It isn’t a genius story, and at no point did I feel truly drawn into the world the characters inhabit. 

The thing is, it isn’t really bad. It’s just not an attention-grabbing film. It feels like it was made for TV, on a channel designed to show low-budget films no one wants to watch anywhere else. I am absolutely certain that there is an audience that will find this riveting, as I’m sure the makers want, but it’s not me, and I don’t know anyone who would be a part of that audience. 

I try not to be negative about films, but I am struggling to be overtly positive about this one. I found myself unable to fully immerse myself in watching the film, and I’m disappointed about it. British crime dramas are usually much more enticing to me, and often provide deep, thoughtful looks at the aspects of the worlds they are set in. Not this time.. 

Overall, this is not good enough, and it’s a shame. Indie filmmaking is one of the most important aspects of the art world, and I respect anyone taking a risk in that world. Unfortunately, sometimes it just doesn’t work. 2/5 from me this time….
