It was a pleasant surprise at the Cineworld Secret Screening 3 with the Finnish horror movie Hatching directed by Hanna Bergholm and starring Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkilä and Jani Volanen.
I have to say that I didn’t know that much about the movie and only knew what I had seen with the teaser trailer that had been released, so I was intrigued by how the movie would come across and being a Secret Screening how many people would walk out simply because it was;t what they wanted the screening to be, we had 28 walkouts for this one, with a few leaving as soon as the first set of subtitles appeared on the screen.
A young gymnast, who tries desperately to please her demanding mother, discovers a strange egg. She hides it and keeps it warm, but when it hatches, what emerges shocks them all.
Hatching is a little of a slow starter, we are introduced to the family which seems to be a very happy one, but family life isn’t as perfect as it may first seem, a crow comes into the house causing havoc and destroying the living room and what seem to be prized possessions, upon catching the bird Tinja (Siiri Solalinna) gives the bird to her mother who breaks its neck without flinching!
Shortly after Tinja here’s cries from the woods and finds the bird has survived and is in pain, she brutally bashed its brains in with a stone, but then she finds a small egg and takes it home to care for the offspring of the bird!
But this is no ordinary egg and it increases in size until something grotesque hatches from it, which I have to say I wasn’t expecting it was a pleasant surprise and I had no idea of what was to come of this creature that although it looks hideous, its eyes bring it some bizarre cute factor.
Those that walked out of the Cineworld Secret Screening of Hatching have really missed a movie that sucked me in, the mystery of the Hatching is very well done, and the cast is great to watch with Sophia Heikkilä as Tinj’a mother who is so domineering and trying to get her daughter to be the best gymnast that she wanted to be in her younger days before getting married and having children.
As the story unfolds we not only learn more about the family and how it’s not as perfect as it looks, but we are also taken on a strange and somewhat horrific journey for both Tinja and the Hatching, this movie is very different to a lot of the horror movies that I’ve seen over the years, it’s well written, produced and directed, bringing the viewer a story that will not only shock but also bring in some smiles to the genre.
Hatching is a unique horror and I really hope that it gets a wider release in the UK and it is shown in plenty of UK cinemas when it is released on the 16th of September, this is a movie that horror fans need to see on the big screen with fellow fans of the genre.
