The first Cineworld Secret Screaming has happened and last night we witnessed a preview of Chris Nash’s acclaimed IN A VIOLENT NATURE, set for release in UK & Irish cinemas on 12 July.
IN A VIOLENT NATURE, the ground-breaking and gruesome debut feature from writer and director Chris Nash (ABCs OF DEATH 2), premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival and introduced the masked and murderous Johnny, who’ll stop at nothing to retrieve a precious locket, to terrified audiences.
When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, it entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime. His body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.
Going into this film I wasn’t sure what I would be getting. Still, I was pleasantly surprised with the great framing of its 4:3 ratio to the atmosphere that the film creates without the horror tropes that we are used to with a “slasher movie”, but what stands out with this film is the murders that become more and more gruesome as the film moves along. At first, I had a Friday the 13th and Evil Dead feeling with the supernatural feel, which are certainly great homages to some of the classic horror movies.
This is a film that isn’t for the faint of heart or those who are expecting action. In a Violent Nature is a film that makes the most of framing, cinematography and a great use of sound. What makes this film different from other slasher movies is that the story is told from the point of view of the killer, much of the film is a rear shot of them walking through the forest heading towards the victims before we are given some gory kills that will take your breath away.
Look out for what we are calling the “Yoga kill”! I have to say that I haven’t seen anything like this in a horror/slasher movie before and it is shockingly done and shows one of the many reasons that In a Violent Nature has been rated 18!
Beautifully shot in the Canadian wilderness, with a nerve-wrackingly eerie score, In a Violent Nature takes the slasher movie to the next level, there isn’t that much to the story other than a supernatural killer looking to take back what’s his and the acting is certainly on the low Indie film budget. But strangely enough, everything works to bring this unnerving film to the big screen. This is a film that may turn into a bit of a “Marmite movie”, you are going to either like it or hate it.
