Rhyl Residents to Receive Birthday Gift Honours

Wonderful news for RHYL residents who are set to receive a special honour to mark HM The Queen’s 90th birthday.

The residents of the seaside town in North Wales who are sharing their milestone 90th birthday this year are to be given a gift by Rhyl Town Council.

Rhyl Mayor Cllr Barry Mellor said: “The Queen’s birthday is being marked up and down the country. Some of our Rhyl residents will also turn 90 this year and we wanted to give them a present to mark the occasion.”

Those turning 90, or who have already turned 90, during 2016 will receive a special HM The Queen commemorative coin and Rhyl town pin badge.

Residents celebrating the big birthday can put themselves forward or can be nominated by friends or family.

“The birthday honour is open to any Rhyl citizen who has turned, or will turn 90, this year, ” added Cllr Mellor.

The gift is part of a series of celebrations lined up in the town to mark HM The Queen’s birthday.

A Royal event is also planned which includes the world’s smallest cinema, a human jukebox, royal train, street games and treasure hunt in various Rhyl locations. The event will be held on Saturday, June 11, 11am – 4pm.

More Celebrations Planned for Rhyl’s Right Royal Weekend

To also coincide with celebrations of HM The Queen’s 90th birthday, Rhyl will also see the world’s smallest cinema making its debut in a North Wales town, the solar-powered cinema seats 8 people at a time and it will be showing old films of the town alongside short, independent movies, the cinema will be free for visitors and shoppers when it arrives on Saturday June 11.

The event, which also includes a human jukebox, treasure hunt, prince and princess fancy dress competition and a themed ‘royal’ train at the town’s miniature railway, has been organised by Rhyl Town Council.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Mayor of Rhyl, said: “Over the next 12 months we’ll be bringing events of a different kind to Rhyl and involving as much of the town as possible with the ‘Royal’ weekend being held in a number of different locations. The cinema has something of a cult status having appeared at festivals the length and breadth of the UK so we’re delighted to welcome it to Rhyl for the first time.”

The event is the first in a series planned by the town council  over the next 12 months. A countryside weekend, community festival and a live advent calendar for Christmas are in the pipeline as are projects and initiatives to help Rhyl communities.

Cllr Mellor added: “There is a lot of regeneration and development planned for the town and we’ll undoubtedly start to see some changes over the next few months. In the meantime, we want to provide something fresh and new for the people and families of Rhyl and engage with businesses and community groups regardless of their location in the town. Bit by bit we also hope to entice people back to us.”

The Royal Weekend will run from 11am – 4pm with activities in a number of locations.

The Sol Cinema will be based on the High Street.

  • The Human Jukebox, where members of the public can pick a track to be sung or played for them, will be outside the Town Hall, off Queen Street.
  • The Treasure Hunt will take place in a number of locations through the town.
  • Any child who comes dressed as a prince or princess will be given a prize from Rhyl Town Council.
  • Rhyl Miniature Railway will dress one of its trains with red, white and blue bunting to mark the occasion. Runs 10.30am until 4pm. Normal charges apply.
  • 4 The Community-based at St Mary’s Church, Wellington Road, Rhyl, will host free street games for children from 11am on the day.
