It’s time for another one of the Sky Original Movies that has recently arrived on Sky Cinema and NOW TV, SAS: Red Notice stars Sam Heughan, Ruby Rose, Andy Serkis, Hannah John-Kamen and Tom Hoppe.
SAS: Red Notice is based on the bestselling novel by former SAS operative Andy McNab featuring his character Tom Buckingham played by Sam Heughan (Outlander, Bloodshot). Tom Buckingham is an off-duty SAS Solider that has to take on a psychopathic terrorist (Ruby Rose) who has taken control of a train that is running through the Channel Tunnel and wants revenge, it’s down to Buckingham (Heughan) to save the passengers and take down the terrorists.
I have to start by saying that I’ve not read the book that SAS: Red Notice is based on so I can’t compare the material, but the film is one of the better ones to come out of the Sky Original stable for a while, especial after the awful TWIST and the mediocre reworking of Blithe Spirit.
The film starts off with “The Black Swans” on a mission to “persuade” a village to clear out so that a gas pipeline can go through the village, suffice to say things don’t go exactly to plan and as Grace Lewis (Ruby Rose) and her team enter the village a gunfight starts that causes a domino effect for the Swans.
It’s now down to Tom Buckingham (Heughan) and his SAS team to serve a “Red Notice” to the leader of The Black Swans, William Lewis (Tom Wilkinson) at his country home. But with any action movie things don’t always go to plan as they storm the building to find Grace and her brother Oliver Lewis (Owain Yeoman) have escaped only leaving the father waiting for Tom and one of William’s cohorts in the village tragedy George Clements (Andy Serkis).
With Grace and Oliver on the run, they board a train heading through the channel tunnel that fate would have it Tom and his girlfriend (Hannah John-Kamen, Ant-Man and The Wasp) are also on as they both head to Paris so that Tom can pop the question and ask her to marry him, but The Black Swans have other plans for the train and its passengers as they have planned a devastating plan of revenge.
SAS: Red Notice has some nice little twists thrown in during its almost two hours of run time and it does look good with the cinematography, especially in the outdoor shots at the start and of some of what appear to be drone shots over the landscapes etc. I wouldn’t say that it’s an all-out action movie as the pass does slow down to an almost dead stop at some points but the action that does happen is nicely done with some good fight choreography.
It’s a refreshing change to see Sam Heughan out of his Jamie role from Outlander and he holds himself well in the film, Ruby Rose plays her character well and the psychopathic feeling that Grace has is portrayed well. I do think that the film could have been a little shorter as I did find myself checking on the odd occasion to see how much longer SAS: Red Notice had left to run.
SAS: Red Notice is one of those film that you really don’t have to think much about while you are watching it as you just roll with it as it plays along, not the best action movie out there but it has all the Sky Original movie trimmings that I think we have all got used to now.
