I love a good murder mystery, and being a fan of Agatha Christie, I was intrigued that See How They Run is set up around the time Christie’s The Mousetrap celebrated its 100th performance in the 1950s.
In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal crew member is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theatre underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.
See How They Run is very much the film of the play with a twist that it is in itself trying to work out who has committed the murder of the movie producer and much like The Mousetrap you are kept guessing from the start which is one of the things that always appealed to me about the movie when I first saw the trailer.
Director Tom George (This Country) has brought us a delightful and funny directed take on the classic whodunnit genre with Mark Chappell’s excellent script that takes The Mousetrap to another level with a mystery wrapped up in a mystery and this works great on the big screen with Agatha Christie’s masterpiece as the background for the murder mystery.
The story takes us on a wild investigation from the stage at the theatre to the streets of London with some fantastic dry comedic moments from Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell as they try to find the murderer with Stalker jumping to conclusions, the one-liners from Ronan’s character are brilliant and may be on the borderline of some of the dad jokes, but they just work so well with Rockwell’s dry whit.
The set design and costumes look great in the movie and really give you that 1950s feel, the soundtrack from Daniel Pemberton (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Trial of the Chicago 7) is a joy to listen to and I have to say that there were times that my foot was tapping along to many pieces of the music in See How They Run, when it comes to the cast the movie is like a who’s who of superb actors that are perfect for the roles with David Oyelowo, Adrien Brody and Ruth Wilson to name but a few, look out for Shirley Henderson who plays the Dame, I loved her in this role.
If you are a fan of whodunnits then See How They Run is certainly going to be a movie you will want to check out, it’s great to see a down-to-earth movie on the big screen without all the overblown action and CGI, this is a movie that much like Christie’s The Mousetrap will have you working out the clues from start to finish, but remember much like the play, please don’t spoil it for others by telling people who the murderer is.
