“You say you don’t love me, but you don’t leave me”, the sentiment
echoed throughout the latest single by Hasten Mercy, aptly titled, You
Don’t Leave Me. As this experimental producer continues to dazzle with
his unique take on the light-toned EDM fusion of Rock and Alternative
sounds, You Don’t Leave Me becomes an excellent follow-up to last year’s
self-titled EP release. This track is a slow-tempo narrative focusing on
the main theme of coming to grips with what someone means when they say
hurtful things. With the dynamic use of metaphor and colorful imagery,
Hasten Mercy allows the listener to become fully invested in the main
lyrical prose as songwriter, composer, instrumentalist, and vocalist
Michael Baker hypnotizes with his simple yet progressive melody. The
repetitive nature of the melodies and the chorus sections gives this
indie rock track a club fee, as it garners a movement reaction from the
audience. Perhaps a remix for the clubs is in the future for this track?
Hasten Mercy dabbles with many effects throughout You Don’t Leave Me,
yet does so in a very tasteful manner. With the subtle use of reverb,
delay, and pitch shifting, the audience is allowed to hear the raw
vocals, and the stripped-down instrumentation, while still absorbing the
full-spectrum experience this recording offers. The bright overtones of
Michael Baker’s voice resonate over the main mix, allowing these higher
frequencies to be replayed at loud volumes crisp and clear. Although the
production effort is very well-executed, we still are offered a
contemporary indie/alternative sound that not only pays tribute to the
genre, it channels it perfectly. You Don’t Leave Me will fit into any
adult Contemporary, Alternative, or Rock commercial radio playlist. The
infectious chorus, sing-along lyrics, and clever melodies make it an
excellent fit for any prime-time, heavy rotation content radio is always
looking for. You Don’t Leave Me is a great effort and a clear indication
that we have not heard the last of Hasten Mercy anytime soon.
