The Dizzy Heights of ‘Skyscraper’ in RealD 3D – Review

At first glance of the Skyscraper trailer, my first thoughts were ‘Die Hard’ or even the classic movie, ‘The Towering Inferno‘, so I wasn’t totally sure of which direction Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson‘s movie would take, suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I check out the movie at my local Cineworld today.

Skyscraper certainly starts as it means to go on, with the introduction of The Rock’s character 10 years before the events at The Pearl, we see how he lost the lower part of his leg and how he was introduced to his wife, jumping 10 years on and we are in present day, he now has a new job, two kids and is happy with his life out of the service.

He is introduced to the creator of The Pearl and has been given the task to check the security of the hi-tech building before it can be granted insurance and wow what a building, it’s huge, it’s so huge that it has it’s own gardens etc for the section where residents will live, if and when the go-ahead is given for insurance.

Skyscraper Inside - Still

But as this is an action/disaster movie nothing is going to go right and shortly after Will Sawyer (The Rock) leaves the building things take a turn for the worse, when his family are trapped in the “safest building in the world” as flames start below his families accommodation, Sawyer is mistaken as the culprit of the fire and not only is he now a wanted man, but he has to save his family from the burning building.

Skyscraper – Dizzy Heights of RealD 3D

As you would expect from a film with Johnson in it, there is certainly plenty of action, so much so that the film is a roller coaster ride of crazy stunts and set pieces, from fights to leaping from cranes into the burning building, its all bonkers, but it’s so much fun for all of its silliness.

There really isn’t that much of storyline to follow, save the family from the Skyscraper and find out why the fire was started in the first place, that’s about it really, but the action makes up for the lack of storyline, there were many times during the movie that I was on the edge of my seat and thanks to the RealD 3D, I was also feeling moments of dizziness as Sawyer looked out of broken windows to the street below, climbed an absolute monster of a crane and even walked along the ledge outside with the help of Duct-Taped hands!

[click_to_tweet tweet=”‘If you can’t fix it with duct tape, then you’re not using enough duct tape.’ – Will Sawyer (@TheRock – @SkyscraperMovie)” quote=”‘If you can’t fix it with duct tape, then you’re not using enough duct tape.'”]

The RealD 3D certainly adds to the special effects of the movie, the inner view of the Skyscraper early on in the film looked brilliant and with this type of movie 3D makes it that little bit better.

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber ( We’re The Millers) has put together an all-out action/disaster movie that may not be a movie to feed the brain, but it’s certainly one that has more than enough action in it to keep you watching, very much a popcorn movie and a movie that will have many mixed reviews, but for the action content itself is a scorer.

Skyscraper also stars Neve Campbell as Sarah Sawyer. So if you’re looking for something that you can just watch and enjoy the action, then this is one for you.

If you missed the theatrical release then news in that Skyscraper is heading to DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, 4K and On Demand on November the 19th, 2018.
