Last night we had the chance of seeing the new movie Spy before its UK release on the 5th June, starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and  Jude Law, Spy is a comedy movie based on the world of espionage.
Susan Cooper (played Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (played by Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (played by Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a global crisis.
With Susan having a crush on Fine (Jude Law) and being someone who none of the enemy spies would recognise, she takes on the task of going into the field to “observe and report” back to HQ on the whereabouts of a nuclear device, but hey, we all know that’s not going to happen.
With Rick Ford (Jason Statham) quitting, she goes on her mission, but Ford is also there trying to complete his own personal mission. I have to say that the I loved the lines that were given to Statham as the unkillable Ford, such as “I was driving along the top of a moving train in a car on far, I was on fire, not the car“.
What ensues is a movie that not only had me laughing but all the packed out cinema on this special preview showing at Cineworld in Llandudno, with Miranda Hart running alongside Melissa McCarthy, Spy does have a lot of moments when you are laughing out loud.
McCarthy really stands out in the movie and I’m not just talking about the disguises that her boss (played by Allison Janney), her screen presence really stands out in each scene of the movie. Paul Feig has not only done a brilliant job directing the movie and writing a great script that is not short of its rather over the top one-liners insults, as many of the characters are trying to better each other with a good insult.
At one point McCarthy is given a disguise to where and when we next see her she says, “I Look like someone’s homophobic aunt“, yes it is an over the top comedy, but it works.
Feig certainly brings in more moments of what’s going on, just to bring in some bizarre and funny moments that just work so well, such as bats living in the roof space of the CIA basement and being released only to cause havoc while Cooper is on a mission with Fine.

I went in, thinking, “Oh here we go, another spy spoof“, let’s face it there have been loads of them, but Spy does it well, funnily well. I haven’t laughed so much during a screening for a long time as I did during Spy. Now I’m looking forward to seeing Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters next year, fingers crossed it will be as good as this movie.
