Over the past decade, Christopher Nolan has become one of IMAX’s most important and influential filmmaker partners, so when I heard that he had filmed TENET with IMAX cameras I was really excited to see the film.
So before I go into my thoughts on the new film, I thought I would bring you a little bit of information about IMAX for those that may have not discovered this immersive cinema experience yet.
What makes this film a different experience in IMAX?
Christopher Nolan designed TENET with IMAX in mind – capturing the film with IMAX cameras, among the highest-resolution cameras in the world, and also refining the film throughout post-production in an IMAX cinema to further optimize how audiences will experience the film in IMAX. Only in IMAX cinemas will these sequences expand vertically to fill the entire screen – providing audiences with even greater scope and breathtaking image quality for a truly immersive experience.
IMAX is the world’s most immersive cinematic experience. Everything from the movie itself to the cinema design, projection and sound has been customized and enhanced to make you feel like you are part of the action.
TENET IMAX Review
OK dear readers let’s get on to the film, it was a welcome return to the IMAX at Cineworld in Broughton today to finally get the chance to check out TENET, now like most of us I’d seen the trailers for the film and heard the buzz that was going around about the film, but I have to say that watching the film in IMAX is a brilliant way to see it.
Right from the very start, you not only get a massive screen to see all the action on, which in itself adds to the feel of TENET, but you also get that IMAX sound and that is used brilliantly in the film, the bass rumbles through the seats and into your body with the superb soundtrack from Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, The Mandalorian), listen out for moments when parts of the instruments and music reverse to play with your mind, brilliantly done and a joy to listen to.
TENET also looks stunning with the cinematography from Hoyte Van Hoytema (Dunkirk, Interstellar), it is beautifully shot and the use of the IMAX cameras makes certain scenes really pop such as the theatre scene which makes you feel as if you are in the vast auditorium.

You may have heard people saying they don’t get the movie, but I have to say that if you concentrate on the film and take the clues in everything falls in place as the film progressives, this is what makes Christopher Nolan a master storyteller, the idea of the films is that “The Protagonist” is armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, he journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time.
If like me you love the idea of time travel then TENET is going to appeal to you straight away, you may have seen the reversed sequences in the trailer these are nothing compared to how they work in the content of the movie, it’s amazing how the actors are going forward when other things are going backwards and it all works brilliantly as the film unfolds with the mystery of why this is happening, who or what is causing it and the possibility of destruction that it can all cause.
The cast in TENET is great, John David Washington (Malcolm X, Ballers) who plays The Protagonist is superb in his role as he goes through the film trying to figure out what is happening and why much like we are as the viewer. I was impressed with Robert Pattinson (The Twilight Saga, The Batman) as well, I have to say after seeing in this film, it has set me up to see him as Bruce Wayne/The Dark Knight in the upcoming Batman movie.
When it comes to villains in a film they can sometimes be hit or miss but TENET has a great actor playing a great villain, I absolutely love Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk, Avengers: Infinity War) in the role he has in this film it is certainly one of those love to hate characters which is perfect for a villain.
TENET is a mind-bending film and one which is certainly in my top 10 movies list of 2020, it has almost everything you want from a good blockbuster, action, intrigued, great story, superb music, cast and excitement. I would really recommend seeing the film the way it was shot and that’s in IMAX, take in all the immersive sound and visuals to this fantastic film from Christopher Nolan.
