I finally got around to seeing The Marvels IMAX release at Cineworld Broughton last night and although the film has had some bad reviews I really enjoyed the film and it certainly isn’t the worst of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilised universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
Having recently experienced Marvel’s “The Marvels” in IMAX, I find myself in a state of conflicting emotions. The visual spectacle is undoubtedly awe-inspiring, with larger-than-life superheroes and breathtaking action sequences that truly come to life on the expansive IMAX screen.
The film’s cinematography and special effects merit praise, as expected from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The vibrant colours, dynamic camera work, and seamless integration of CGI contribute to an immersive experience that leaves you on the edge of your seat. The larger format of IMAX does justice to the grandeur of the superhero universe, offering a feast for the eyes.
However, where “The Marvels” falls short is in its narrative depth. The storyline, while entertaining, feels somewhat disjointed, attempting to juggle multiple characters and plotlines. This can be overwhelming for both avid Marvel fans and casual viewers alike. The pacing, at times, feels rushed, leaving certain character developments and plot twists lacking the depth they deserve.
The ensemble cast delivers solid performances, but with so many characters in play, some arcs feel underdeveloped. It’s challenging to connect with each character on a meaningful level, and the emotional impact of pivotal moments is diluted by the film’s ambitious scope.
Despite its narrative shortcomings, “The Marvels” still manages to deliver on the promise of superhero action and serves as a visual feast for fans. If you’re a dedicated Marvel enthusiast who thrives on the sheer spectacle of the cinematic universe, the IMAX experience enhances the film’s strengths. However, for those seeking a more nuanced and cohesive storyline, the film may leave something to be desired.
“The Marvels” in IMAX is a rollercoaster of visual thrills, but it falls short of achieving the narrative excellence that some of its predecessors have achieved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a solid addition to the franchise, but not without its flaws.

Summary
The Marvels is not the best in the MCU, but it’s by far no means the worst. The film is lots of fun and the IMAX looks and sounds stunning with plenty of Expanded Aspect Ratio changes throughout the film.
