It’s the movie that everyone is talking about, that movie is The Mitchells Vs The Machines which is showing on Netflix, the new animated movie from Sony Pictures Animation.
A quirky, dysfunctional family’s road trip is upended when they find themselves in the middle of the robot apocalypse and suddenly become humanity’s unlikeliest last hope. I have to say that this movie has a fantastic look to it that we first saw in the brilliant Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse, the CGI in The Mitchells Vs The Machines works extremely well and is such a joy to watch.
Starring a superb voice cast including Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph and Abbi Jacobson we are taken on the journey of not only fun, action and comedy but also a journey of family and building a relationship with one another through trying times, the father and daughter relationship is superbly portrayed in this fun family film.
Danny McBride certainly brings over his vocal talents as the father Rick Mitchell with some great comic lines that may seem a little less adult than what we may be used to with his roles, but hey this is a family film after all. Maya Rudolph is very distinctive with her voice casting for the mother Linda Mitchell and is the glue that tries to hold the family together.
Abbi Jacobson is great as the daughter, Katie Mitchell, who is probably like most teenagers these days that seem to have their heads stuck in their phones no matter what is going on around them. But I have to say that the scene-stealer in the film has to be Monchi, the family’s pet pug, it’s hysterical in the majority of the scenes it is in and will have you laughing out loud.
On the trip to the film school that Katie has been accepted into robots start to take over the world and as the Mitchells fight their way to the school we are given some fantastic moments lookout for homage to Dawn of the Dead with Furbys, yes you read that right, it’s hysterical and adds to the superb animation of The Mitchells vs The Machines as all the humans are being captured by the power-hungry phone app PAL voiced by the brilliant Olivia Colman.
The Mitchells Vs The Machines is such a delightfully family fun movie, there is something in there for all ages, I loved that subtle things were put in for the adults watching to laugh as much as the kids watching, such as the Dawn of the Dead homage and adding things like the Kill Bill music that just works so perfectly for the scene that works great for the kids watching it as well.
I would love to have seen the movie in the cinema when it was originally planned for release back in 2020 under the title connected but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic we missed out on a theatrical release, thank heavens for Netflix stepping in and Sony selling them the distribution rights for the movie and it was retitled to The Mitchells vs the Machines which was the preferred title of the writers’ Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe.
If you have Netflix then this is a movie that you have to see, Rianda and Rowe have written a charming and very funny script that will certainly give those chuckle muscles a good workout, so grab yourself a few bags of munchies & drinks and sit back and enjoy the comedy delight that is The Mitchells vs the Machines.
